Coming off a very successful stint in Dallas, Texas for World Class Championship Wrestling, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin (James Williams) made his first appearance in the St. Paul Civic Center on October 21, 1984 defeating Tom Zenk. Garvin was a flamboyant character that excelled on interviews and was seconded by his valet Precious (his real life wife Patti). After beating Steve Olsonoski on the November 22nd St. Paul card, Jimmy decided it was time to make his presence known to AWA champion Rick Martel. On the November 25th edition of All Star Wrestling, the flagship TV program of the AWA, Garvin attacked Rick Martel before Martel's match with Rick Renslow could even begin. The bout never started as a brawl between Garvin and Martel ensued. This melee set up the bout between Jimmy Garvin and AWA champion Rick Martel on December 25th at the St. Paul Civic Center. Martel won that match by disqualification. A rematch scheduled for January 13, 1985 in St. Paul was signed between the two rivals. Garvin won their second encounter in the Twin Cities by disqualification. Rick Martel was incensed by Garvin's valet Precious interfering in their matches and recruited Big Bertha Von Raschke (Baron Von Raschke in drag wearing a wig) to second him against Garvin so Precious would not interfere. The third battle between Garvin and Martel on March 24th in St. Paul saw Rick Martel cleanly beat Jimmy Garvin to settle their feud at least in the Twin Cities.
