From this point forward, Dillon was at ringside, yelling instructions, showing frustration and building intensity.  As Emory started playing the rope game, going into the ring only long enough to break the count before slipping back out between the ropes.  Finally, in the final 45 seconds of the match, Emory got back in the ring and took some punishment, but managed to avoid getting caught in the Avalanche.

After the final bell, Emory rolled out of the ring to give Jerry Brisco (doing color commentary at the time) an, “I’m so lucky and Avalanche Tyler is such a great athlete,” interview.  Meanwhile, JJ Dillon got in the ring to let his displeasure be known to the referee.  During the course of Eric’s interview, JJ verbally berated Bill Alphonso and made it known that he believed Fonzie had done the wrong thing in not counting the pin when he should have.  The TV portion of this match ended with Tyler giving Alphonso the big, dreaded Avalanche slam.

The outcome of the angle?  Dillon was established, immediately, as an elite manager – right up with Humperdink, Gary Hart and the rest.  Tyler was established as a solid performer and put into a ready-made program.  Embry was primed to move up on the cards and become a hot mid-card babyface in the successful Florida territory.

These are the kinds of angles that we don’t see anymore in wrestling.  Tyler, obviously the lead in-ring star in the program, did the right thing for business in letting Embry look strong throughout the match while not giving up any of his heat.  Dillon, the experienced and wily manager, used his experience, verbal skills and personality to place both in-ring performers higher on the card.  Embry, by presenting himself as a humble beginner and NOT going over Tyler, made the angle believable and ended up with a push bigger than any fan would have expected.  Like I said, they don’t make angles like this anymore!

While I fully understand that this does not belong in the top 25 of all time, it definitely belongs in the top 25 that I was fortunate enough to witness.

Coming in September, Manof1000hold returns with another article.  In October, I’ll examine another angle that would go in the top 25 from my time frame
