Killer Karl Kox

- Mike Siegel

Killer Karl Kox entered the world of professional wrestling in 1956 at the age of 25.  The Original Sheik (from Detroit) was instrumental in giving his career a large boost back in 1961.  Eddie Graham once referred to him as "The Best Gimmick Man in the Business"

One of my earliest memories of Killer Karl Kox comes from an interview he was doing with commentator Lord Athol Layton in Detroit.  After becoming annoyed by Layton's questions and comments, Karl interrupted by saying "You know, you stand out here, night after night with that thing you call a microphone, and I wonder if you're able to digest that microphone, because one of these fine nights I'm gonna personally shove it right down your throat!"  Enough said.

Kox spent time in Florida both as a "good guy" as well as a "bad guy".  During the mid 1970's Karl came into the area and began to wreak havoc as he was well known for.  Karl often would look up to the sky for advice from "Alex".  He's talk to "Alex" during the matches, propping someone high up in the air for his finishing move, the "Brain Buster", he'd blurt out things like "OK ALEX, HE'S ALL MINE".

One of my favorite angles with Karl from the mid 70's involved another bizarre character, Lars Anderson.  Anderson was at that time, claiming that he could not be beaten in the ring on television.  He brought out a bag of Silver Dollars (I believe it was 1000 of them) and challenged anybody who could defeat him on Television in a 10 minute time limit match could have the Silver Dollars.

Kox often liked to come out and sit with legendary commentator Gordon Solie to lend his comments during the matches.   Karl and Lars Anderson were also good pals at the time.  After several weeks of Anderson beating the crap out of jobber after jobber, Anderson finally had his Silver Dollars on the line against one of the headliners.

I'm not sure, but I believe it was Mike Graham who had Lars Anderson in trouble during the match.  Anderson was being tossed all over the ring and looking desperate.  Just when he's on his back about to be pinned, after the 1 count, the bell rings.  Solie is certain that the time limit has not expired yet and starts questioning Kox.

Solie: Did you ring that bell!  More...
