 - Will Gonzalez

Welcome to another installment of SWCW where today I will talk about the last months of the promotion. Last time I talked about the many stars that had made appearances in the area, but Joe Blanchard was going to bring some big guns in for an outdoor show at Harlindale Memorial Stadium. He was going to bring in such superstars as: Carlos Colon, Abdullah the Butcher, Jimmy "The Boogie Woogie Man" Valiant, Blackjack Mulligan, Kevin Sullivan, as well as bringing back the Rock N Roll Express.

The build-up to this card was something else. The football stadium which seats about 15,000 people was only going to be open on one side to make sure all fans would be able to see all the action. With only over 9,500 seats it was sure to sell out quickly. In the coming weeks matches were being announced and the main event was going to consist of 3 matches. One of the most interesting matches was going to be the long standing feud between Colon and the Butcher. All their matches all over the country were bloodbaths and this match would probably be no different.

The card consisted of 15 matches and lasted almost 5 hours, below are the results of the important matches on this card:

Carlos Colon vs. Abdullah The Butcher No Contest

In a Steel cage:   The Sheepherders Beat The Zambuie Express

Evelyn Stevens Beat Susie Green

Blackjack Mulligan beat Kevin Sullivan by DQ after Sullivan threw a fireball at Mulligan

Jimmy Valiant Beat Killer Brooks by DQ

Fabulous Blondes Beat the Rock N Roll Express.

This card was held in late August but by this time the financial problems were getting worse, but in late September Joe Blanchard brought in the best tag team in the country at the time the Road Warriors, along with Jos Leduc, and Brett Sawyer.

But later in the year disaster struck for
the companyFred Berhend, a local bail bondsmen and Blanchard's partner did something that all but killed the promotion.  Berhend was helping Fritz Von Erich promote many cards in South Texas, and decided to sell most of the SWCW Television time slots to World Class Championship Wrestling.

This only left a handful of English stations and  the rest were Spanish stations  that carried SWCW.  This was a shock because Southwest mainly held cards all over Texas.

By Jan 1985 the promotion was all but done with the company all but finishedBlanchard decided to change the name to Lone Star Wrestling. It would take in effect in Feb of that year.

The following were the last SWCW Champs at the time the promotion closed.

SWCW Champion- Kevin Sullivan
SWCW Tag Team Champions- The Wild Maoris
SWCW Junior Champion- Ron Sexton.

Once Lonestar come aboard the end of a great era had come, for many like myself who were fortunate to see SWCW knew that we lost something that will never come back ever again.
