My wife Chris was cooking with an electric skillet and an electric coffee pot. I really don't know how she took it, in that little room with four kids. I could walk to the office from the motel. I went and talked to Bill Golden and got my bookings as he was the booker and was running things for Lee Fields in Louisiana.

I was booked to referee in Baton Rouge Tuesday night, TV on Wednesday morning, Alexandria Wednesday night, spot show Thursday night, Lafayette Friday night, TV Saturday morning and then another spot Saturday night.

Boy was I in hog heaven. Bill Golden asked me if I wanted to ride with him that week. He said referees did not have to pay transportation. I told him I would be glad to. That left our car so Chris could take the kids and get them started in school. I met Bobby Fields in Baton Rouge Tuesday night, but didn't get to meet Lee until Friday.

When I met Lee I was so taken in by him, he didn't treat me like I was just another referee, or someone trying to get started in the business. It seemed like I had known him all my life. As a matter of fact as time went by the whole Fields family took me and my family in like we belonged to them.

After about six months of riding with Bill and different boys to the towns I was just leaving the Sports Arena in Lafayette when Bobby Fields drove up and asked me if I wanted to go and have a beer with him. I went with him and never rode with anyone else, if we were booked in the same town. By this time we had moved from the motel to an apartment right behind the Sports Arena where the office was and where we wrestled on Friday nights. We also did our TV there on Saturday mornings. I was in the office all the time except when I was out putting up cards.
