AWA #22 Page #2

On June 16th, 1974 in Green Bay Wisconsin, the Crusher and Billy Robinson defeated Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens but did not capture the AWA tag straps because they won the third fall by disqualification. Crusher and Billy demanded a no disqualification tag title match against Bockwinkel and Stevens on the next Green Bay card.

The AWA complied with their request and a no disqualification match between the two teams was signed for July 21st, 1974 at the Brown County Arena in Green Bay, Wisconsin. On that fateful night in Green Bay, Billy Robinson and the Crusher beat Bockwinkel and Stevens to win the AWA tag team titles.

Bockwinkel and Stevens were incensed by losing the AWA tag team titles to Robinson and the Crusher and claimed to be victims of a conspiracy theory perpetuated by the AWA hierarchy. Bobby Heenan was brought in as the manager of Bockwinkel and Stevens and made his first television appearance seconding Nick and Ray in a match against Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell on August 10th, 1974. Bockwinkel, Stevens and Heenan delivered a vicious beating to Gagne and Brunzell serving notice to the AWA that they meant business. With Heenan at their side, Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens sets their sights on regaining the AWA tag team titles from Billy Robinson and the Crusher. Robinson and Crusher successfully defended the AWA tag straps against Bockwinkel and Stevens on numerous occasions during the summer of 1974. Nick and Ray scored a disqualification victory over Robinson and the Crusher on September 12th, 1974 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada but didn't win the belts due to the AWA rule that titles can only change hands on pinfalls or submissions. Bockwinkel and Stevens demanded a no disqualification title rematch on the next Winnipeg card just as Robinson and the Crusher had done a few months earlier in Green Bay. The promoters honored Nick and Ray's request and signed a no disqualification title rematch between the two teams set for October 24th, 1974 in Winnipeg. Due to the interference of Bobby Heenan, Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens defeated Billy Robinson and the Crusher to regain the AWA tag team titles.

The feud between Superstar Billy Graham and the Crusher had taken many twists and turns during the early to mid 70s. While Crusher and the Superstar did meet in several singles bouts, their rivalry mainly involved tag team confrontations with Crusher usually teaming with Wahoo McDaniel and Superstar partnering with Ivan Koloff. When Koloff left the AWA in early 1974, Larry Heiniemi took Ivan's place alongside Billy Graham. When Wahoo departed the AWA in July of 74, Polish Power Ivan Putski became Crusher's partner against Superstar Graham and company.

Around the same time that Wahoo left the AWA and Putski entered the fray, Baron Von Raschke returned to the AWA and paired up with Billy Graham. Once German superstar Horst Hoffman began teaming with Von Raschke on a regular basis in November of 1974, Graham would often join the hated German duo for six man tag team matches. Raschke and Hoffman turned on Billy Graham during a six man tag team bout on November 16th, 1974 in St Paul, Minnesota. Superstar Billy Graham shocked everyone by bringing The American Dream Dusty Rhodes back to the AWA to be his partner against the Baron and Horst Hoffman. Graham and Rhodes eventually won their violent, bloody feud against Von Raschke and Hoffman and were in line to recieve title shots against AWA tag team champions Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens in May of 1975. Superstar Graham had a disagreement with AWA promoters reportedly over money and promptly left the AWA. Dusty Rhodes and Superstar Graham were scheduled to meet Bockwinkel and Stevens on May 17th, 1975 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois. Because Superstar Billy Graham had already departed the territory, Dusty Rhodes came to the ring by himself that night in Chicago. Nick and Ray started pounding on Rhodes when all of a sudden the Crusher dressed in street clothes ran down to ringside to aid Dusty. Bockwinkel and Stevens proceeded to rip Crusher's clothes and before long the match was underway. The unlikely team of the Crusher and Dusty Rhodes took two straight falls from Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens but were not awarded the AWA tag team titles because Crusher was not scheduled to be in the match originally. Crusher and Dusty received two rematches against Bockwinkel and Stevens in Chicago. The first rematch on June 28th, 1975 ended in a no contest. The second rematch on July 19th, 1975 saw Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens emerge victorious.

Unable to win the AWA tag straps from Bockwinkel and Stevens with Dusty Rhodes at his side, the Crusher once again called upon Dick the Bruiser to be his tag team partner. On August 16th, 1975 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois, Crusher and Bruiser defeated Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens to become AWA tag team champions for the fifth time.

Rene Goulet (Bob Benard) had always been a capable wrestler but never could seem to rise above mid card level. In May of 1974, Dick the Bruiser gave Rene the gimmick of Sgt Jacques Goulet of the French foreign legion in the Indianapolis, Indiana based WWA. Bruiser did everything he could to make Sgt Jacques Goulet a killer heel gong as far to lose an Algerian death match to Goulet on the June 29th, 1974 Indianapolis card and to bring the Sheik to Indianapolis to team with Goulet. Even with Bruiser putting Goulet over and getting the rub from teaming with the Sheik, it was still hard for many fans to accept Sgt. Jacques Goulet as a main event heel because he had been an undercard performer for so long. That being said, Bruiser was determined to go forward with the push of Sgt Jacques Goulet. Don Fargo was brought in as Private Don Fargo to be Goulet's partner in the Legionnaires on August 31st, 1974. Fargo had previously worked in the WWA as Jack Dillinger of the Chain Gang. The Legionnaires quickly captured the WWA tag team titles from Wilbur Snyder and Pepper Gomez on September 21st, 1974 at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana. Goulet and Fargo went on a huge winning steak and appeared to be invincible champions. In March of 1975, Goulet and Fargo had a falling out due to something that happened outside the ring and Fargo ended up leaving the Indianapolis territory.

Soldier Zarinoff Lebeouf came to the WWA as Goulet's new partner in the Legionnaires in April of 1975. Crowds were a bit down in Indianapolis at this time so Bruiser called upon the Crusher to be his partner against the Legionnaires. Bruiser and Crusher feuded with the Legionnaires not only in Indianapolis but Chicago as well. The Legionnaires' reign of terror came to an end on September 20th, 1975 in Indianapolis when Bruiser and Crusher defeated Goulet and Lebeouf in a German Gestapo Death match to capture the WWA tag team titles for the fifth time.

Special thanks once again to George Lentz, publisher of the Crusher Lisowski record book. Thanks also to AWA historian Jim Melby and WWA expert Mike DuPree. DuPree's WWA column on the Legionnaires from several months ago was very helpful in finding correct dates of Indianapolis cards.

Once I finish covering the career of the Crusher, I'm toying with the idea of doing a column on the great AWA enhancement performers or jobbers from the past. If you would like me to do a column on AWA preliminary wrestlers or if you would like to suggest what prelim guys I should cover, please drop me a line at JZ92264@webtv.net.

NEXT MONTH:

I'll finish covering the career of Reggie The Crusher Lisowski.
