GCW #17 Page #2

When the two groups came back together Apollo did not come back to GCW.  Apollo was very artistic; he loved to paint portraits and made a living painting for awhile.  I remember once seeing his work on display in a small art show around Atlanta.   He died from cancer on August 2, 1984.

I could write a book about the Assassins but they have been talked in earlier installments so just look back for information on them.

The match ended as everyone had hoped it would with the team of the Assassins losing and the team of Armstrong and Apollo winning the belts.

The semi-main event was for the Macon singles title the champion Buddy Colt vs. Big Bill Dromo.  Buddy was a heel from the word go. He had the bleached blond hair and was as mean as spit.  He held the Georgia title for what seemed forever when I was a kid.  Buddy would often tag with Billy Spears and together these two blondes would terrorize the area. Buddy was always in the middle of a feud with the top baby.  He had blood baths with such greats as Bill Watts, Dusty Rhodes, and many others.  Buddy was injured in a plane wreck in 1975, the same wreck that killed Bobby Shane, another great heel, injured Mike McCord (later to be known as Austin Idol) and manger Gary Hart.  Buddy would never wrestle again after the wreck but he did stay in the business working with Florida Championship Wrestling as the color guy with Gordon Solie.

Big Bill Dromo was another Georgia boy.  He was about 6’5” and weighed around 270 or so.  I do not remember much about him expect he wore his hair greased back and threw a mean punch. He always seemed to be in Georgia and I can never remember him turning heel or anything like that.   I did have the pleasure of meeting him once and he was very nice.  This match was early in the feud stage and Buddy cheated to gain the victory.  The following week they had a special NO DQ match.  Buddy lost by count out and kept his title.

The under card was full of great talent including Dick Steinborn, El Mongol, Oki Shikina, Roberto Soto, and others that I can not remember.

NEXT MONTH:

We will take a look at some of the great mangers and referees to work in GCW.
