A short time later the Dudes got a shot at the world tag team titles held by The Freebirds. During the match the Midnight Express ran in and cost the Dudes the match. This led to a final match at Clash of the Champions IX: New York Knockout in Troy, NY. Corny was in the Dudes corner and during the match Eaton went after Corny and Douglas made the save. Corny told him to keep fighting and when he did Corny hit him with the racket and Eaton got the pinfall. Corny had double crossed the Dudes and retuned to "The Dark Side". Remember how I said that the fans almost unanimously hated the Dudes? The crowd loved Corny turning on them.

That was the last match the Dudes had as a team. Afterward Johnny Ace was a jobber and went to Japan. Douglas left for the WWF and would return in 1992. The moral of the story is that the fans are more than mindless robots who cheer and boo who you tell them to. The NWA pushed them down the fans throats and they rejected them. Think about this the next time you watch your favorite wrestlers and ask yourself "Why am I cheering for this?"
