Pittsburgh/Buffalo/Cleveland #3 Page #2

Baron Mikel Scicluna may not have been the most technically sound wrestler but was one the best at getting heat. Scicluna was a frequent competitor in both Pittsburgh and Buffalo/Cleveland. Baron Scicluna has to be known for his long feud with Dominic DeNucci that stretched from the Pittsburgh territory, throughout the NWF and back into the WWWF. The Baron was slow and methodical, relying on foreign object and great facial expressions.

Scicluna had many shots at Bruno Sammartino's world title and was always competitive in those matches. The Baron would later hold the WWWF Tag Titles with King Curtis. As a youngster I probably saw the Baron grace more cards in the Johnstown War Memorial than any other wrestler. His matches not only with DeNucci and Bruno, but against Johnny DeFazio and Tony Parisi are memorable to fans from this area.

Finally a wrestler that saw success in both areas was Eric the Red. He would later in the NWF change his name to Eric the Animal. He would hold the North American Title in 1973 with a victory over Johnny Powers in Buffalo, only to lose it back to Powers. A big 300 pound plus wrestler began as a Viking but later became known as Eric the Animal in 1973, using a large bone as a weapon. Eric would have success in Pittsburgh getting matches against Bruno Sammartino, Tony Marino and Dom DeNucci. Eric the Red was killed in a car wreck in Florida in 1978 while helping someone change a tire.

I would be remiss not to mention other top Heels of these areas such as Ox Baker, whose interference in an Ernie Ladd match in the Cleveland Arena in 1972 set off a riot that is probably the most famous piece of film footage from this territory. Killer Kowalski who had many great feuds with Bruno in Pittsburgh, Kurt von Hess, Hans Schmidt, Pampero Firpo, John L Sullivan and Killer Brooks.

NEXT MONTH:

I will look at tag team combinations, from this region.
