The Sicilians

Lou Albano & Tony Altimore dominated the 1960's in Pittsburgh as the Sicilians. They would feud with Battman & Bruno Sammartino for several years. Both wrestlers had only moderate success previous to their teaming, but together they were main eventers. Altimore would never again achieve as much success as he did teaming with Albano, Lou would go on to be one of the greatest managers in the history of pro wrestling.

Bruno Sammartino & Battman/Dominic DeNucci

Bruno would spend most of his energy defending the WWWF title, but he would on many occasions team with his two close buddies Battman (Tony Marino) and Dominic DeNucci. Many great main events in Pittsburgh would feature some combination of these guys against the likes of The Mongols, The Sicilians, The Fargos, ect. They teased a world tag title change in Pittsburgh in December of 1969, with Bruno & Battman beating Prof. Tanaka & Mitsu Arakawa for the world tag titles, after they had already lost them in Madison Square Garden 4 days earlier to Victor Rivera & Tony Marino (Battman).

Of course I did not cover every great tag team in these areas, so let me also mention Luis Martinez & Fred Curry, Dr Bill & Dan Miller, Mitsu Arakawa & Mr. Sato (and Prof Tanaka), Waldo von Erich & Baron Scicluna, Victor Rivera & Manuel Soto, Pete Sanchez & Manuel Soto, Bruno & Bill Watts, and finally Waldo von Erich & killer Kowalski.

NEXT MONTH:

I will look at the ten most memorable bouts for me in the Pittsburgh Studio Wrestling era.
