Bob Brazil defeated Killer Brooks in defense of the US Title, Wahoo McDaniel was brought in to team with Chief White Owl and they beat the NWF tag champions the Fargo Brothers by a count out, thus the Fargo's retained their tag titles. The fabulous Moolah beat Vicki Williams, Toni Rose & Donna Christenello beat Sandy Parker & Debbie Johnson in a women's tag title match. In a Brass Knuckles match for the NWF North American Title, Abdullah the Butcher beat Ernie Ladd via DQ. In the main event Johnny Powers successfully defended his North American Title by beating Johnny Valentine.
The crowd was not what Martinez had hoped. The matches from all accounts were good, if not spectacular. What was a major event in Cleveland wrestling history could have been a major event in the history of pro wrestling had some of the tournaments been scratched for angle involving feuds. With only 2 real feuds being solved (really only the Powers vs. Valentine match had a conclusive ending) and less than a month later in Cleveland, Valentine would defeat Powers for the North American Title. Three weeks Powers apparently beat Valentine but the title was held up pending an investigation into the finish. Powers would be given the title after defeating Valentine on Nov 23 (their big Thanksgiving show) they would feud on, as would Ladd and Abdullah the Butcher. Victor Rivera would beat Abbey for the NWF title in Sept. But lost it back in Oct. Tony Parisi & Luis Martinez went on to beat the Fargo's for the Tag belts late in the year in Cincinnati, OH. By late 1972, Ladd started to split his time between Los Angeles, where he held the Americas title and the Cleveland promotion. The year 1972 was a hallmark year for Cleveland wrestling, perhaps better booking of such a major event as the "Super Bowl of Wrestling", and the NWF may have been around a lot longer than it was. The failure to pack the stadium was by no means the end of the promotion. They would continue on for several more years full of great action and a who's who a pro wrestling superstars appearing. Not being part of the NWA was as much of a down fall for Martinez as anything. A industrial based economy didn't help matter either.
NEXT MONTH:Next month I will look at the outside promotion that had an influence on Pittsburgh-Cleveland and Buffalo
