The match received a lot of publicity and a TV News show (of the channel in which the show aired at the time), presented the news and also presented Carlos training for this match.
Also Carlos defeated Abdullah for other titles. Abdullah defeated Carlos Colón for the North America Title on August 11, 1981, only to be stripped a few months later for attacking Carlos brother, José Colón (August). Abdullah defeated TNT (WWF's Savio Vega) for the Universal Title on March 24, 1990, only to lose it a week later to Carlos Colón.
This feud had several events that had marked it as the more violent and more remembered in Puerto Rico. Most of the matches (if not all) ended in blood and it was a 'daily dish' in our wrestling history. Although the dates escape my mind at this moment, some to mention are:
Carlos's brother attack by Abdullah, already mentioned above.
In 1982, Abdullah made a surprise attack on Carlos Colón when Colón was wrestling the Mongolian Stomper, and this time Carlos Colón was injured, which led to one of the barbed wire match I mentioned before.
Once, in 1986, Abdullah The Butcher, unable to defeat Carlos, threw ammonia in Carlos's eyes, blinding him and keeping him out of action for several weeks. Carlos had to vacate the Universal Title due to this injury.
Before that, probably 1985 or early 1986 (Bruiser Brody stint as a heel) Carlos convinced Abdullah The Butcher (they showed on TV a briefcase full of money) to turn babyface to feud his most hated opponents, that at the time included Dory Funk Jr., Stan Hansen, Bruiser Brody and Ric Flair. But one time, on a cage match vs. Brody and Hansen, Carlos was the man to escape from the cage to win the match, but he left Abdullah on the cage alone with those two monster and they beat up Abdullah, so when the cage was finally open, Abdullah blamed Carlos for the attack and once again turned on him.
Most of Carlos Colón's scars have come from Abdullah The Butcher fork's attack. Once, in late 1992, Abdullah The Butcher attacked Carlos Colón when Carlos was completely naked and taking a shower on the locker room. Finally, in 1997, Abdullah lost a match to Carlos Colón and had to retire (at least from Puerto Rico), but in 1999, they aired an angle in which Carlos traveled to Atlanta and went to Abdullah's restaurant and there he talked to Abdullah, telling him he underwent shoulder surgery because Ray González had turned heel and was trying to end his career. Abdullah then returned as babyface and remained in Puerto Rico as a babyface for the last two years and has been friend with Carlos Colón. He ended up retiring from Puerto Rico as a babyface, to make it better with fans who saw him as a monster heel for over 20 years. He is loved between fans of all ages and Abdullah, after all his matches, dances to the song LIVING IN AMERICA by James Brown, making the fans cheer for him.
