WWC Intro Page #2
It was when the 1980's came about that the better WWC really saw an upswing. WWC began a working relationship with the NWA and Carlos Colón was one of the board members. With this relationship, came such great NWA wrestlers as the NWA champions Dusty Rhodes, Harley Race, Jack Brisco, Terry Funk, Dory Funk, Giant Baba, Tommy Rich, Kerry Von Erich and Ronnie Garvin. And of course, one I almost forgot, that provided many classic bouts in Puerto Rico... I'm talking about Ric Flair.
During the 80's, WWC was at one time considered among the top five promotions in the world, even the third in the USA at a time, but the problems began in 1988 with the Brody event. That year, WWC was planning to began airing PPV's to the USA but these plans changed forever. It was here that the company began to fall down and it has been trying to recover ever since.
The 90's, however, was a different story, and WWC through its best and worst, has survived and actually, although having strong competition from IWA (that is using WWF wrestlers in shows every two to three months), WWC remained #1 in ratings and in fan attendance. Just as it has for the last 27 years. Puerto Rico has had many intriguing feuds that can be reviewed and I hope to be useful to all of you.
NEXT MONTH:
I will be talking about the most famous feud ever in Puerto Rico: The Carlos Colón vs. Abdullah The Butcher feud.
