We started to Columbus, Ga. one Monday night in
Bill's old pick-up truck. Columbus at the time was a fifteen dollar shot. Dick
Steinborn was promoting and we were going head to head with Fred Ward and the
NWA. They ran the big auditorium and we ran the National Guard Armory. About
half way there it started to rain and Bill turned on the wipers. The wiper motor
made an awful sound and BOOM, no wipers.
Bill's truck had those little triangle shaped
vent windows on either side of the truck. We tied rope to both wipers and ran
the rope thru the vent windows. Bill drove and I operated the wipers by pulling
the ropes back and forth. I was the first off speed wiper motor and did not even
know it. We made the town.
Next time you see the shot of a wrestler getting out of a limo, think about all the guys who loved this business so much they are willing to do whatever it takes to make it. My hats off to those of you who love our business for what it was, and always will be in our memories. My generation is a dying breed. I was lucky enough to be a part of something that I loved.
