Owen Family 60th Anniversary Extravaganza
- John Baumer
Saturday night rolls around and another weekly show at the Portland
Sports Arena commences. The usual KPTV camera crew is on hand. Four
thousand fans pack the converted bowling alley. But this night was not
just another night. It was three days before the biggest show in
the history of the territory.
Don Owen had booked some of the top, and most expensive, names in the
nation to come to the Portland Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday May 21,
1985. But three days prior to the arrival of the NWA and AWA world
champions, the WWF's top heel, and the AWA World tag team champions,
only 5,000 tickets had been sold to the 13,000 seat Coliseum.
What follows is a detailed description of the historic week leading
into the huge event:
Saturday May 18, 1985. Portland Wrestling went on the air on KPTV
channel 12. Don Coss sayidthat the surprises that night would pale in
comparison to the surprises that would be happening Tuesday night at the
Coliseum, and told fans to come on down to the Coliseum Tuesday, because
there were over 6,000 available tickets.
Buddy Rose beat Steve Simpson all over the arena screaming about
where Roddy Piper was. Rose had just come back from New York to take
part in the Extravaganza, and was booked to take on his old archrival
Piper. Rose made an example out of Simpson, but before he could get the
pin, the time limit expired.
Don Coss went over the calendar of events, which looked like this:
Sunday: Finley
Monday: Yakima
Tuesday: Portland (special)
Wednesday: Seattle
Thursday: Salem
Friday: Eugene
Saturday: Portland
Sunday: Seaside
Monday: Dallas
Tuesday: Cottage Grove
Wednesday: Medford
