 - Will Gonzalez

As 1983 came to a close it seemed that the talent was getting better as some of the biggest stars were making stops in the Southwest area, but it seemed that the attendance at shows around the area were getting smaller. Due to the expansion of the WWF and the NWA, Southwest was feeling the effects of both organizations.

On the wrestling side as 1983 was coming to an end the Rock N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) were locked in a feud with the Fabulous Blondes (Ken Timbs and Eric Embry) over the SWCW tag team titles. In one of their battles the titles were held up and later the Blondes won the rematch and the belts. It was just the beginning of a tough year for the Blondes.

Meanwhile Scott Casey was still the SWCW Champion having defeated Tully Blanchard for the belt and he had a handful of wrestlers attempted to take his title and for 5 months he kept the title till Killer Brooks back from a trip to Georgia won the title from Casey. After winning the title Brooks began a bloody feud with Bobby Jaggers, there battles were very bloody and included anything from Barbed wire to cowbells. There battles were not for the weak at heart.

The SWCW junior belt was also in a heated battle as champion Relampago Leon was defeated by Adrian Street in 1984, they had a few battles for the belt but Street won a series of rematches. Bobby Fulton who had been teaming with Tony Falk began to challenge Street for his belt. After a few months Fulton finally won the belt, but he had little time to celebrate as Eric Embry was trying to regain the belt her had held.

In late Feb 84 The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn and Stan Lane) showed up as the SWCW Undisputed World Tag Team Champions, on TV it was told that the won a tournament in "Australia" and thus were the champions. Upon arriving on the scene they began a feud with the Sheepherders (Luke Williams and Butch Miller). Within a few weeks the Sheepherders won the belts from the Fabulous Ones in San Antonio and yet another violent feud began in the area. There battles for the belts were classic bloody wars and it seemed every match ended in some kind of disqualification, the battles became personal and the belts were not very important to the teams. Just inflicting pain seemed to be what both teams cared about.

Despite all the top action in the area attendance was declining in most arenas and the area was not producing as it once had, as a one time attraction Mil Mascaras made an appearance in San Antonio battling Killer Tim Brooks for the SWCW title. Despite the Superstar Massacres making an appearance the Hemisfair arena attracted a small crowd, the action on the evening included the Mascaras vs. Brooks match along with Sheepherders vs. the Fab ones, and Embry vs. Fulton. But still the crowds stayed away, within a few months Promoter Joe Blanchard himself wrestled a few matches hoping to attract crowds but it helped very little.

As the money woes continued for Blanchard he got a business partner to hopefully help him out with running and the shows and hope for a quick turnaround. What would happen with his new partner???

NEXT MONTH:

I will talk about what happened and one of the most exciting summers ever in the SWCW area.
