Hi there to my "old", "newer" and "newest" friends, fans and readers:

This month's reminiscence is going to be somewhat shorter than last months' due to the fact that Judy, the love of my life, is recovering from surgery and wasn't able to help with the editing and typing as she did last month.  So, please keep her in your prayers and pardon the grammatical errors if there are any.

I know that it must seem that the stories that I submit all make me the "brunt of the jokes" but honest, folks, this stuff did happen.  It still makes me laugh.

The match that I want to tell you about took place in the early 1980's at the St. Louis Keil Auditorium before some 20,000 wrestling fans.  It was a match between myself and Terry Funk.  I was still a babyface and very much (or so I thought) a crowd-pleaser; however, the match for the evening called for me to I guess be one-half baby face and one-half heel.  However, in order to put Funk across, I probably was more than the one-half heel.  Funk was very well liked and immensely popular in the area.

If I recall correctly, it was the third match of the evening and was given much publicity and was eagerly looked forward by all in attendance.  I did all of the "things" that the "bad boys" do:  I continually got in and out of the ring.  I yelled and fussed with rowdy ringside fans. I told everybody how big and bad I was and that they hadn't seen 'nuthin yet!  Little did I know how right I was about that statement!!!

I finally located a little old gray headed lady that always sat in the front row.  She could have been anybody's grandmother, that's how sweet and innocent she looked.  She was "the perfect fan" to get into an argument with and really make me come across as an insolent jerk.  We had a several sentence rally of insults to one another and then.....then, I turned around to the audience and raised both my hands up in a symbol of victory and as an insult to her.

That little old lady, who couldn't have weighed 90 pounds wringing wet got up out of her chair, raised her walking cane, and knocked the "poot" out of me from behind.  I mean, she cold-cocked me!  I didn't even see it coming.  I remember going down to my knees with everything blurred.

As the match was still in progress and had to be finished, I got back into the ring and Funk and I did what we both do best, we gave 'em a match to remember.  I lost the match to Terry and I also lost to a little sweet smiling grandma who could have put Mark McQuire to shame with the swing that she had.

The referee had to help me to the dressing room.  I had a lump on my head and a sore spot for at least three days.

Yes, there are morals to this sad but true tale:

1.  Do not EVER turn your back to the crowd;
2.  Do not EVER turn your back to sweet little old grandmas when you have ticked them off.
3.  In fact, DO NOT EVER TICK OFF SWEET LITTLE OLD GRANDMAS AT ALL.

Terry Funk could not get the grin off his face when I climbed back into the ring.  I don't know if it was worse losing to him or to the Mark-McQuire-grandma-lookalike.
  Which would you prefer to lose to?

So, that's my tale, sad but true.  See you guys next month.  Hope that all of you have a Happy Mother's Day.
