 - Ashley Parrish

As I stated in my first article, the Amarillo territory was comprised of several cities in the Southwest. Many great matches took place outside the city of Amarillo in places like El Paso, Lubbock, and Odessa. The territory was pretty spread out, so the wrestlers had to spend plenty of time traveling by car. In fact, Terry Funk wrecked two cars in one day, but that's another story. For most of the 70's, the weekly schedule was as follows: Monday-El Paso; Tuesday-Odessa; Wednesday-Lubbock; Thursday-Amarillo; Friday-Abilene; Saturday- Amarillo TV taping, Colorado Springs and spot shows; Sunday-Albuquerque. You have to respect the guys that made that run every week. This month, we'll look back at some of the great action that took place at the other towns on the circuit.

El Paso

Matches in El Paso were promoted by Gory Guererro, the patriarch of the Guererro wrestling clan. Because of El Paso's presence on the Mexican border, the audience for wrestling was largely Hispanic. Naturally, Ricky Romero, Mil Mascaras, Chavo Guererro, El Santo Negro and other wrestlers with Latino heritage were extremely popular. Matches were held at the Coliseum and featured the top stars from the Amarillo promotion. El Paso also featured wrestlers who didn't make it to Amarillo very often, like Mil Mascaras and El Santo Negro.

This world title match up was featured on a card promoted as the Super Bowl of Wrestling. Karl von Steiger came to the area in 1972 as your typical German heel. He had a fairly nice run in the territory, capturing the Western States title on a couple of occasions. Additionally, he teamed with Zigfried Stanke to capture the Western States tag titles in 1974, defeating the team of Dory, Jr. and Ricky Romero. Von Steiger captured the first fall with an abdominal stretch. Dory rallied to take the next two falls with a guillotine cradle and backdrop, respectively.  More...
