In this month's installment, we'll look back at some of the great tag teams that held the Western States tag team titles in the 70's.

In 1971, there were two top notch tag teams that came to Amarillo. The first part of the year was dominated by the team of Lorenzo Parente and Bobby Hart, The Continental Warriors. They appeared along with their manager Buck Robley and proceeded to dominate the tag action in the area.

Later that summer, the Infernos returned to Amarillo. Both teams were heels, but that didn't stop them from facing each other. The Warriors were the tag team champions when the two teams met at the Golden Anniversary show of Amarillo wrestling in September, 1971. In addition to this great tag match, Junior defended his NWA title against Bob Roop, and Robely took on the manager of the Infernos, J.C.Dykes. After a wild encounter, the Infernos came out on top and began another legendary ,heat- filled stint in the territory.

In 1972, a great young tag team was formed by Bobby Duncum and Dick Murdock. Duncum and Murdock captured the tag belts and held them for a good part of that summer . The rough blonde duo turned back numerous challenges. They defeated former champions Masio Koma and Mr.Okuma on two occasions at the Sports Arena. They whipped Dory Funk, Sr. and Pak Song to retain the belts in Amarillo, as well. In August, they defended their titles at the big outdoor show headlined by Junior and Fritz von Eric. The challengers, Rikki Starr and Lord Alfred Hayes, had formed a popular team. To the delight of the fans, Starr and Hayes prevailed.

In 1973, the Fargos invaded Amarillo. The team of "brothers" consisted of John and Don. John was a seasoned veteran who had also wrestle as one of the Dalton brothers. John you probably know better as Greg "The Hammer" Valentine. The Fargos took the titles from the popular duo of Nick Kozak and Lord Alfred Hayes. Terry Funk and Dory Sr. tried to down the Fargos on a couple of occasions, but were unsuccessful. The Fargos also prevailed over Kozak and Hayes in a New York Street Fight.

The Fargos dropped the belts in May to the team of Rickey Romero and Moose Morowski.. Morowski and Romero would hold the belts twice during the year. After dropping the belts to Buck Robely and Hank James, they recaptured them from the great Mexican team of Gordman and Goliath.  More...
