- Ashley Parrish At the conclusion of my last installment, Abby and the Sheik had double teamed Terry Funk at the Lubbock Fair Coliseum and left him a bloody mess. Abby appeared unstoppable and his alliance with the Sheik assured complete mayhem and packed houses for the rest of the summer. While the Butcher’s feud with Terry Funk was hot in Lubbock, the Super Destroyer had become his top rival in Amarillo. The Super Destroyer was actually the veteran grappler Art Neilson under a hood. He was powerfully built and used a bearhug as a finishing maneuver. The Super D appeared on the scene in 1975 and feuded with the Funks, Romero and other top faces. While his brawling style didn’t change in his battles with the Butcher, the fans reaction toward him certainly did as he was robustly cheered. Abby had cleaned house in Amarillo. He had even eliminated Andre the Giant in a 15 Man -Up-The-Pole Battle Royal. The Giant’s ousting allowed J.J.Dillon to scurry up the pole to claim the $10,000 prize. Abby continued his attack with the chair until SD was saved by the great heart puncher Ox Baker. Even Baker was cheered against Abby. Baker and Abby wrestled to a double DQ the following week. After SD had recovered from his bloody loss, he met the Butcher on July 21 in a steel cage match with the added stipulation that both wrestlers would be searched by the police before entering the cage. The steel cage match was a wild one. The attendance was standing room only. At the 15-minute mark, SD was dominating the action but accidentally hit referee Ken Farber and knocked him out. JJ then tried to climb over the fence and into the ring but was knocked back to the floor by SD. By this time Abby had recovered and while Farber was still out, Abby removed the ref’s belt from his trousers. He snuck behind SD and wrapped the belt tightly around his throat. As SD’s body went limp, Farber recovered and awarded the match to Abby. Ox Baker returned to Amarillo the following week to try and settle the score with the Butcher. He too was defeated after Abby jabbed him in the throat with a foreign object. Abby had been in the territory for two months and no one had defeated him. More...
