- Ashley Parrish At the end of the last installment, Abby and the Sheik had torn up the Lubbock Fair Park Coliseum, literally and figuratively. Abby had also left Andre the Giant a bloody mess in the ring in Albuquerque and neither of the Funks had scored a victory over him. Ricky Romero had clashed with the Butcher in El Paso without gaining a clear cut win. Cyclone Negro battled Abby in Lubbock in a battle of heels the week after the melee with the Sheik, but fared no better than the others who had challenged the Butcher. Fans clamored for someone to beat the Sudanese wild man. But, who could? On August 4, 1977 Abby and the Super Destroyer resumed their rivalry at the Amarillo Sports Arena. A German Blood Match was booked for them. German Blood matches were occasionally booked in Amarillo, but not too often. They were generally reserved for the most intense feuds. The rules were simple: Whoever could soak some of his opponents blood on a handkerchief first would be declared the winner. The match was sort of a forerunner of the first blood match. Additionally, each man would have a second at ringside. Abby of course was seconded by JJ Dillon. SD chose Ted Dibiase. The Sports Arena was again filled to capacity. Guaranteeing the fans a little color always brought out the big crowds. The match featured all the usual brawling to be expected from these two. Abby was fantastic. Abby constantly appeared to be entranced with his eyes frozen in a wide open state. No one has ever performed the lunatic heel gimmick any better than Abby, and he was at the top of his game that night. The two had battled for about twenty minute when Abby began pounding on SD’s shoulder and arm with his foreign object. SD recovered and pounded Abby’s forehead with his fist. Both men were bleeding. SD, however, was able to soak his handkerchief first. The Super Destroyer was awarded the match and became the first wrestler in the Amarillo to defeat the Butcher. The loss didn’t take away from the Butcher’s heat. He was booked the following week against Dory, Jr. Unfortunately, Dory wasn’t able to wrestle that evening and Ted Dibiase took his place. Dibiase was young and promising, not too far removed from his days at West Texas State. His match against Abby lasted about ten minutes. Abby pulled out his foreign object . Dibiase took it away from him. The ref caught Teddy and DQ’ed him. Teddy would have better days ahead. More...
