DUSTY RHODES - Hated "Texas Outlaw" becomes the "American Dream". - Mike Siegel The first time I saw Dusty Rhodes wrestle I was about 8 years old living in the Detroit, MI area (The Original Sheik's territory). Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch were known as the Texas Outlaws. During a television match, after pinning some hack, they continued taking turns running across the ring and dropping elbow smashes on him. Australian commentator Lord Athol Layton called out the the referee "Referee Make them Stop! Make them Stop"! Layton continued yelling to the referee, then decided to climb up on the ring apron. Rhodes and Murdoch grabbed him promptly and gave him the exact same treatment, elbowing the legendary commentator into unconsciousness. Layton was carried off on a stretcher. Upon arrival in the Sunshine State, it wasn't long before I stumbled across "Championship Wrestling From Florida" for the first time. A familiar face stuck out right away .... none other than the "Texas Outlaw" himself, Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes was the top heel in Florida at the time, battling fan favorites like Thunderbolt Patterson and Paul Jones. He could talk smack better than anyone and always gave 100% in the ring. You couldn't ask for any more energy in and out of the squared circle than 'Big Dust' could deliver. Rhodes would soon give us a classic TV perfomance. Jack Brisco was the NWA World Champion at the time and appeared on the show to do a workout with an up and coming wrestler, Dennis Stamp. (If you've seen "Beyond the Mat", you might recall Terry Funk talking a very discouraged Dennis Stamp into refereeing the "last match" of Funk's career.) Brisco works out with Dennis Stamp doing some basic wrestling maneuvers with him for about 10 minutes or so. When finished, Gordon Solie waves Jack over to the desk for an interview. He asks him, "What's your opinion of this young Dennis Stamp". Brisco responds, "Well Gordon, I never miss a chance to work out with anybody... and that's one of the reasons" More...
