The
Legendary Funk Brothers - Dory Funk, Jr. &
Terry Funk - Mike Siegel Dory Funk,
Jr. and Terry Funk always stirred a lot of heat when they visited the
Sunshine State. The Funks had a long standing Feud with the Briscos.
There has always been great animosity between Dusty Rhodes and the Funk
Brothers as well.
Terry Funk and Dusty Rhodes have battled in a variety of matches
over the years. In fact,
shortly after Dusty Rhodes won the World's Title for the first time, I
believe it was 6 or 7 days later that Harley Race was to wrestle Rhodes
for the rematch. Rhodes entered the ring first. While waiting for Harley
Race to appear, Terry Funk storms the ring and attacks Rhodes, breaking
his arm.
Rhodes fights with a "broken arm" hanging by his side
and loses the Title to Harley Race in one of the shortest Title reigns
in CWF History. The first
time I ever heard of an "I Quit" match was when Terry Funk
issued the challenge to Dusty Rhodes on Championship Wrestling From
Florida in the mid seventies. They wrestled the match at the Bayfront
Center in St. Petersburg. Gary Hart was acting as manager for Terry
Funk. The fans got their monies worth that night.
About a minute into the match Funk picks up the mic, slowly walks
over to Rhodes as he's lying on the canvas.......... "Do Ya Give
Up!" he asks. Rhodes
answers with a comically delivered "Hayyyulll No! He quickly gets
up and starts delivering punishment to Funk. The match progresses past
the 30 minute point, both men asking for the "I Quit" on
several occasions, but neither willing to Quit.
A short while longer, Rhodes gains a large edge on Terry Funk and
begins giving him a solid 'Texas Whoooopin'! After
several minutes of this, Gary Hart tires of the horrible beating that
Funk is taking. He grabs the mic and yells "HE QUITS, HE QUITS....
YOUR GONNA KILL 'EM DAMN IT!"
The referee calls for the bell and Rhodes is declared the winner.
Terry never actually said the "I Quit" but lost the match
anyway. On another occasion Gordon Solie brought Terry onto the program to congratulate him on all of his success. He went on to talk about other great wrestling families that have had success in the business. He mentions several concluding with "The Briscos, The Grahams". More...
