Bobby Shane Killed, 3 Others Injured in Plane
Crash
- Mike Siegel
When Gordon Solie announced that Bobby Shane would soon be coming to
the Sunshine State, wrestling fans throughout the state knew that one of
the top stars in the business was about to arrive on the scene. Sadly,
we'd only get to watch him for a couple of short weeks.
Shane
made his return to Florida known by joining Gordon Solie at the desk,
sitting in as "Guest Commentator". He made no bones about why
he was in Florida. He was after "Jackie Brisco", as he liked
to call him. Brisco was the NWA World Heavyweight Champion at the time.
Shane, like his arch rival, Jack Brisco, used the "Figure Four
Leglock" as his finishing move. He wore a metal leg brace that went
from his knee down to his ankle. When his opponent was trying to get to
his feet, Shane liked to grab him by the hair and use the metal leg
brace to bang him in the side of the head with it.
Gordon Solie and Bobby Shane had a great chemistry on camera and it
showed right away. Shane did a great job of "annoying" Solie
with his one-sided views of the matches.
At the end of his second (and last) show alongside Gordon, as Solie
was giving credit to some of the crew members, Shane interrupted in a
cocky, but jovial manner, "Well, how about a compliment for this
commentator?" Solie quickly concluded - "Until next time, So
Long from the Sunshine State". Shane sat in disbelief that he
hadn't been acknowledged. Classic CWF ending.
Thursday Feb. 20, 1975 was an overcast morning in the Tampa Bay area.
It was almost time for the first class of the day to start. I was in 7th
grade at the time. More...
