- Mike Norris Welcome to the latest installment of Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling. This month I like to change formats a little. Originally I was going to take a look at the Gulf Coast Heavyweight Championship, but over the holidays I have had the opportunity to spend some time in Mobile, Alabama and do some research on the Gulf Coast promotion. Starting this month, I will take a look at a specific year each month. This will allow me to take a more in depth look at the angles, title switches, workers, etc. It will also allow me to make corrections of dates and such that I have incorrectly stated in the past. I will start this month with 1970, the year I moved to the Gulf Coast area. Next month will be a look at 1971, and so forth. I will end with 1977, which was the year Lee Fields closed up shop. The Tyler/Krauser team had a hard time with Dunn & Lucas, so in mid-January they enlisted veteran wrestler Rocket Monroe (Maury High) as their manager. Rocket and his brother Flash (Gino Sanizzaro) had been suspended at the end of 1969 and stripped of the Gulf Coast Tag Team Championship. The titles were awarded to Lucas and Dunn, so Monroe was anxious to get a little revenge by helping Krauser and Tyler. But, even with Monroe's help, Tyler & Krauser fell short. The Demons developed a bit of a feud with Bob Boyer. Boyer went through many partners against the Demons, including Frazier, before finding success with Greg Peterson. The Demons also had taken on a manager, Gentleman Jim Hyde. More...
