- Mike Norris Welcome back to the latest in our time travels through the Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling promotion's history. This year we'll look at 1975. National Wrestling Alliance World's Heavyweight Champion Jack Brisco returns to the area. The NWA World's Jr. Heavyweight title is defended in the Gulf Coast as well. J.C Dykes and his Mighty Yankees return. Cowboy Bob Kelly returns and makes a shocking departure. Before we begin I would like to acknowledge two members of the GCCW family who we have lost since my last report. Virgil "Speedy" Hatfield, referee and matchmaker and patriarch of the Fields Family passed away on June 30th at the age of 93. Randy Rice AKA Randy Tyler passed away on July 22 at the age of 50. Our love and condolences and love go out to Speedy and Randy's families. A bit of good news, Gulf Coast legends Bobby Fields, Curtis Smith and Joe Turner are all recovering remarkably well from their recent bouts with health problems. And Dianna Moody, AKA Mrs. Percy Pringle has been pronounced cancer-free after a year of treatment. JANUARY: The beginning of the New Year saw popular young Terry Lathan holding tight to the Gulf Coast Heavyweight title. He faced stiff competition in former champion, Dandy Jack Donovan. He managed to defeat Donovan once and for all at the beginning of January. He also wrestled to a draw with equally popular Ron Starr in a non-title match. These two quickly formed a fast friendship and soon became tag team partners. Lathan did lose another non-title match to Rugged Rip Tyler, leading to the Ripper receiving a title shot. Unfortunately for the big blonde, his rough tactics resulted in his getting disqualified, allowing Lathan to retain the title. The Hell's Angels, Chris
Colt & Ronnie Dupree were developing quite a feud with longtime Gulf
Coast favorite Bobby Fields. Bobby had been limiting his time mainly in
the Mississippi end of the promotion for the last few years, only making
sporadic appearances in the Mobile/Pensacola and Dothan ends. His
initially returned to the Mobile end as a favor to Mike "Hippie"
Boyette who was having his hands full with the Angels. Boyette was injured
in this match, but now Bobby Fields was after the Hell's Angels. He asked
his longtime friend and tag team partner Cowboy Bob Kelly to come in and
help him in his fight with the wild Angels. Kelly had been limiting
himself to the Mississippi end as well (he was the Mississippi State
champion) and serving as the matchmaker for Lee Fields in Mobile. But the
Fields/Kelly team quickly showed the Hell's Angels why they had been the
Gulf Coast tag team champions once before. And they were after the title
again which Colt & Dupree now held. To combat the Hell's Angels
studded tights and motorcycle boots; Fields took to wearing jeans and
cowboy boots just like his partner. Kelly & Fields even started
wearing mirrored sunglasses into the ring mocking the Hell's Angels. The
first meeting between these two teams resulted in both teams being
disqualified for roughing the referee. Both teams were heavily fined and
all four wrestlers had their pay held up. The rematch was no better as all
four men battered themselves bloody. Again both teams were disqualified
and the money held up. The third time was the charm for Fields & Kelly
when they defeated the Hell's Angels finally and won three weeks pay. Now
they wanted they title belts.
