- Mike Norris Welcome
to another chapter in the history of Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling.
This month we will continue our "flashback within a flashback"
and take a look at the year of 1969. Significant changes were coming to
the territory as it grew into one of the best and exciting, yet overlooked
territories in the history of professional wrestling. The
Gulf Coast Tag Team Championship moves to the forefront as the Gulf Coast
Heavyweight title falls dormant. The Alabama State Heavyweight title is
reintroduced in 1969, as well. JANUARY: Rocket
& Flash, the Magnificent Monroes were still enjoying their reign as
the Gulf Coast tag team champions, but were facing strong competition in
the team of Dick Dunn & Don Carson. Carson was also the reigning Gulf
Coast Heavyweight champion. Carson & Dunn fought with the Monroes in a
match that broke down into a wild melee with all four men fighting it out.
The following week, matchmaker Rocky McGuire booked a rematch and
announced that Bobby Fields would serve as the special referee. During the
first fall, Dunn & Carson worked over the legs of both Monroes before
forcing Flash to submit. Flash evened things up in the second by
continually thumbing Dunn in the throat before pinning him after a kick in
the face. During the third fall Dunn & Carson decided to do a little
thumbing of their own and had the Monroes reeling. Finally, Rocket managed
to get a headlock on Carson. Referee Bobby Fields bent down to get a
closer look to ensure that Monroe wasn't choking Carson. As Fields was
bent over, Rocket smashed a forearm across his back. When Fields go to his
feet, Monroe claimed that it was Carson who had hit him. Fields gave
Carson a look but decided to let thing slide. Then the same thing happened
again. Rocket put Carson in a headlock and then smashed Fields as he bent
in to check the hold. And once again Monroe pointed the blame at Carson.
As Carson protested his innocence, Fields drove a fist to his stomach.
Dunn then got between the two men and managed to calm things down and the
match resumed. Once again Rocket caught Carson in a headlock. Once again
Fields bent in close to check it and once again Rocket raised his arm to
smash down across Fields' back. But this time, Bobby raised up and caught
Monroe in the act. He walloped Monroe across the mouth and knocked him to
the canvas. Carson took advantage of this situation and fell across the
prone Rocket as Fields tolled the three count.
Fields awarded the match and the title belts to Carson & Dunn,
but it just wasn't to be. Carson & Dunn were notified in the dressing
room that they had to return the belts to the Monroes. Furthermore, Fields
was told that he was being fined $50 for his actions. The Monroes were
still the champions. Another rematch was ordered. This time, the Monroes
said that they would allow Fields to referee again, but they wanted to
name a referee of their own to serve as the second referee. They chose
Akio Yashihara. Fields tried to be impartial despite the fact that twice
the Monroes knocked him out of the ring. He even disqualified Carson &
Dunn in the first fall when Carson put Flash Monroe to sleep on the
outside of the ring. He then disqualified the Monroes in the second.
During the third fall, Carson wound up with a bloody head. Yashihara was
so obvious in his favoring of the Monroes that Rocky McGuire came to
ringside and ordered him from the ring, leaving Fields as the sole
referee. The Monroes and Carson & Dunn continued to fight outside the
ring, but Fields was hesitant about calling for a disqualification.
