- Mike Norris One of the most venerated gimmicks in professional wrestling was that of the masked man. Usually a mysterious heel from the hometown of "Parts Unknown", a masked man was as much a staple in wrestling as the ring itself. We had our share of masked men in the Gulf Coast. This month I would like to take a look at those mysterious masked strangers, spotlighting the three most considered the best, the Blue Yankee, the Mysterious Medic and the legendary Wrestling Pro. (As a note, I will list the identity of those whose names I am familiar with. There were some I could not come up with in my research. If a real name doesn’t appear alongside the masked identity, it means I don’t know who was under the hood. The Sixties: The Red Raiders (Tommy Rollins and Leo Morgan) – A top heel team. The Scorpion & Cobra Kid – This team held the Gulf Coast Tag Team titles in March of 1968. The Interns (Bill Bowman and Joe Turner) – This team was managed by the legendary Dr. Jerry Graham. They held both the Gulf Coast and Mississippi Tag Team titles in 1968. Real life half-brothers, Bowman and Turner would hold many other titles around the South under their real names as well as "Joe and Bill Sky". Black Hand (Joe Turner) – Held the Alabama title in July of 1969 and held the Gulf Coast Tag Team titles with Frank Dalton in August of 1969. The Seventies: The Untouchables (Karl Von Stroheim and Frank Martinez) – Together in late 1970 and early 1971, this heel team never seemed to win a match. Unmasked, Martinez stayed around as a preliminary wrestler for a while. Von Stroheim teamed with Mike "Hippie" Boyette to try and capture the United States Tag Team titles from the Alaskans. He turned on Boyette and lost a "Loser Leaves Town" match to the popular hippie. The Red Destroyers – Much like the Untouchables, this team lost the majority of the time. They didn’t stay around very long, just a brief time in mid 1971. More...
