- Eric Garguilo In 1989, in a matter of seconds, one great feud ended and another began. What seemed like an innocent appearance, was the re birth of a legend... one not seen for almost five years. He was a former world champion that was famous to the main stream public only for his attack on a ring announcer. A man that entered our television set only as a judge. No more. No less. He was humble on interviews and a judge, who was sitting at ringside with a quiet demeanor. Soon he became the hottest heel since Roddy Piper. His name was Terry Funk. Terry Funk entered the ring to congratulate Ric Flair. Flair, who had entered the ring that night as a heel, was given a standing ovation for his efforts. No matter how hard he tried to be booed, his effort was appreciated. This whether he liked it or not. Terry Funk issued a challenge to Ric Flair and Flair laughed it off. Who didn't? Half of the fans had no idea who Terry Funk was. The other half hadn't seen him in almost five years. This guy is issuing a challenge to Ric Flair who had just finished the greatest series in years. Now, he was expected to wrestle Terry Funk? It wasn't going to happen. Or was it? Minutes later, shocking the thousands in attendance, Terry Funk was piledrove Ric Flair through a table, a move unheard of in that era. Ric Flair could not move. Terry Funk went nuts in the ring. All of the sudden those that forgot about the crazy Texan soon remembered how insane he was. In a matter of minutes, Terry Funk was soon the most hated man in wrestling. He also became the biggest draw for WCW at that time. The feud between Funk and Flair took a wild road. A feud that could have been more promising went in some strange directions, with politics unfortunately playing a big part. What was a very entertaining angle, turned out to be the downfall of Terry Funk. Not only were the fans upset at Terry Funk, but so was booker Ric Flair. Behind the scenes, Ric Flair was the booker, the man with the power. Ric had recruited Terry Funk for this angle, which was mainly his idea. What he created, he soon put to an end, but for all the wrong reasons. Terry Funk brought out Ric Flair during a WTBS Saturday Night show, only, it wasn't really Ric Flair but rather a fake. He completely humiliated this phony Ric Flair, a move that got him more heat with the Nature Boy then the fans. Ric Flair was sitting out the entire time, with no rebuttal though he was furious. Sting was the top babyface and was the one enacting Ric Flair's revenge. The two headlined the Great American Bash series and drew decent houses. Ric, not being able to rebut on television was angry and upset. He felt that Funk crossed the line and because of that Funk was buried before their first match. More...
