- Mike Campbell On March 27, 1988 Jim Crockett Promotions otherwise known as the NWA held a revolutionary card to go head to head with the WWF's WrestleMania IV Pay Per View. It was known as The Clash of the Champions. It aired at 8:05 eastern on TBS. The show was such a success that the NWA began to hold these shows every few months and give them cute little nicknames like "Seasons Beatings" and "Fall Brawl". On February 10, 1990 NWA held their tenth Clash from Corpus Christi, TX It's official name was Clash of the Champions X: Texas Shootout. I'm not going to get into the whole card but I'm going to cover the basic points of it to show it's importance to NWA history. The show opened up with "Dr. Death" Steve Williams going head to head with a member of the Samoan Swat Team, The Samoan Savage. The show held some cute little mini movies before the introductions of the wrestlers as we could see Williams dressed as a paramedic jumping out of an ambulance to save a victim. This match was supposed to be to prep Doc to take the United States Title from Lex Luger but a situation that happened later in the show changed it and this was Doc's last match in the promotion until 1992. The match itself was a power match and ended with Williams winning with a backslide. Next up was what I feel was a key point in the whole booking of the show. The main event was three of the Four Horsemen Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Sting taking on Gary Hart's team of Buzz Sawyer, Great Muta and Dragon Master. This requires a history lesson. Back at the Great American Bash in July of 1989 Flair was being double teamed by Terry Funk and Muta and Sting came to his rescue. This led up to the former rivals teaming up. In late 1989 Flair reunited with Arn and Ole Anderson to reform the Horsemen and Sting was chosen as man number four. At Starrcade '89 a round ribbon tournament was held and Sting got a pinfall over Flair and earned a shot at Flair's World title. This leads us to Clash X. The Horsemen came out for an interview where Sting was thrown out of the Horsemen!!! Ole explained that when Sting wanted to wrestle Flair for the title he gave up his spot. Sting tried to respond but was triple teamed by Flair and the Andersons. This led up to Ole Anderson replacing Sting in the main event. More...
