MACW #24 Page #2
After Greg initially captured the
title from Wahoo in June; McDaniel took it back in August.
This set up what has been described as one of the best angles in
Mid Atlantic history, if not all of pro wrestling.
During a televised match, Valentine applied a hold that
apparently broke Wahoo’s leg! The
match was halted, and Greg awarded the decision and the title.
The next week, Valentine came out and berated the Indian star as
Wahoo was confined to a wheelchair.
In the next few weeks, Greg showed up on television wearing the
famous “I BROKE WAHOO’S LEG” t-shirt, further adding fuel
to the fire that already burned inside of Wahoo.
McDaniel returned to action in November of 1977 to settle the
score.
After being stripped of the World
Tag titles in April 1978 for what NWA President Eddie Graham deemed as
“unprofessional conduct”, Greg teamed with Baron Von Raschke to win
back the belts in July. The unlikely duo of Valentine & Raschke beat Paul Jones
& Ricky Steamboat who had won the titles in a tournament.
The newly crowned champs would hold the belts until late 1978.
After losing them to Jimmy Snuka and Paul Orndorff, Greg would
move out of the area and head to New York to compete in the WWWF.
He would return to the Mid Atlantic region in 1980.
During the next few years, Greg
seemed to have “dual citizenship” in the NWA (JCP region) and the
WW(W)F. He would wrestle in both organizations and continuing his
winning ways. Greg would
capture the U.S. title in 1980 after splitting with Flair in another
classic televised match. Valentine
turned heel on Flair and actually busted Flair’s nose in the process!
Ric, who was the US Champ at the time, put the belt on the line
against his former partner. Greg
came out victorious and won the title.
Valentine also enjoyed another reign as NWA WTT champion, this
time with the veteran Ray “The Crippler” Stevens.
Then, after being involved in a short program with Sweet Ebony
Diamond (Rocky Johnson) and trading the Mid Atlantic Television title
for a few months, Greg returned to the WWF.
He would once again come back to JCP in 1982.
During what turned out to be his
final push in the area, Greg was once again wearing the United States
Heavyweight Championship. He
won the title from a familiar face…Wahoo McDaniel in November of 1982
in Norfolk, Virginia. However, the next year (1983) would see Greg reach a new
level of brutality as he battled “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
Their feud reached such heights (or depths, depending on your
perspective), these two had to face each other in a “Dog Collar”
match at the first Starrcade. This
match saw Piper come out the winner, but Valentine made him pay for it
by severely injuring Roddy’s ear and “hanging” Piper from the
ropes using the chain attached to the dog collars.
This would mark the final chapter in Greg’s stay in JCP. He finished his run here, surprisingly, as a face wrestler. His final JCP match saw him team with long-time nemesis Wahoo McDaniel to face the monster heel team of The Road Warriors. Greg would actually wrestle for the WWF in early 1984 while finishing out his contractual obligations for Crockett Promotions.
