For
over half a century, Charlotte was synonymous with the wrestling office founded
in 1948 by promoter Jim Crockett Sr. A longtime member of the National
Wrestling Alliance, the company known as Jim Crockett Promotions, Inc.
introduced the brand name "Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling" in
the ealy 1970's. JCP was also a promoter of musical and theater productions and
owned a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.
After
the death of Crockett Sr., his son Jim Jr. took over the Presidency of the
company with assistance from brother David, sister Frances, her husband John
Ringley, and wrestler-turned-booker George Scott, who is credited by most with
being the driving creative force behind the company.
After
Scott left the company in 1981, JCP went through several bookers including Ole
Anderson, Dory Funk Jr., and Dusty Rhodes, and in 1985, began a national
expansion, buying the TBS time slot from Vincent Kennedy McMahon's Titan
Sports, Inc. (which had purchased it following a buyout of Georgia Championship
Wrestling, Inc.).
Somewhere
during 1985-1986, what was known as Mid-Atlantic became known from that point as the World Championship Wrestling
region, or as it's referred to on this site as Jim Crockett Promotions
(1986-1989).
