MACW #29 Page #2
FIFTH
EVENT-MID ATLANTIC TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
This
battle of the brother tag teams was one I would loved to have seen live.
Although Jerry Brisco was a MACW regular right after the Scott
brothers were big, I don't think that all four men were in the territory
at the same time. What a
shame! Any of these men
were accomplished wrestlers as singles, and both had captured tag team
titles throughout the country. But,
a battle of this magnitude for the Mid Atlantic Tag Team Championship
would have to be a classic. Initially,
the match would be a scientific affair with some fast and furious action
taking place. Then, the
Brisco's get frustrated on their perceived inability to dominate the
Scott brothers and start to leave the match!
The crowd gets extremely vocal in their displeasure at Jack &
Jerry. George and Sandy are
a bit dismayed also, and plead with their opponents to return.
Jack and Jerry decide to continue the match, but start using some
questionable tactics. This
leads to a four-way brawl and the ref tries to restore order.
As usually happens, the ref pushes a member of the face team
(George Scott) back to his corner and leaves the other face (Sandy) to
be double teamed by the now heel team.
Jack puts the figure four on Sandy and Jerry comes off the second
rope onto the legs of the Scott brother.
This goes unseen by the ref, and when he turns around, all he
sees in Sandy Scott tapping out and screaming in pain.
The Brisco's have retained their Mid Atlantic Tag Team
championship.
SIXTH
EVENT-MID ATLANTIC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
This
match pits one of the most brutal, sadistic wrestlers ever to appear in
JCP against one of the brightest stars from the early 80's.
Valentine's methodical, stiff style (very reminiscent of his
father's...whom will be in action later on this card) will be a big test
for the young Mike Rotunda. Greg
uses every weapon in his arsenal (elbow smashes, body slams, working on
Rotunda's legs) to wear down his foe.
Valentine has everything under control for the majority of the
match. But, Mike Rotunda
won't quit! As he starts to
make a comeback, the crowd picks up the chant of "Go
Mike, go!".
Mike manages to get back on his feet and begins a counter attack
on Greg. Several shoulder
tackles and a well-timed dropkick and the tide has now turned!
As Rotunda goes for a suplex, Valentine gets a thumb to the eyes
of Mike. Then a big elbow to the side of the head sends Mike Rotunda to
the mat. Valentine grabs
one of Rotunda's legs and comes crashing down.
This is Greg's set up for his figure four and he starts to apply
it. Then, suddenly, Mike
Rotunda leans forward and executes a small package on the champ!
The ref slides over and counts 1-2-3!!!
We have a new Mid Atlantic champion!!
Mike Rotunda has pinned Greg Valentine!
SEVENTH
EVENT-UNITED STATES HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Magnum
TA was a tough competitor during is stay in JCP.
But, I don't think he faced many wrestlers like The Missouri
Mauler. Mauler's style back
in the 60's was a precursor to many of the brawlers we have seen come
along since. Names like
Stan Hansen, Bruiser Brody, and Bam Bam Bigelow have carried on the
"tradition" of Larry Hamilton's rough-and-tumble persona known
as The Missouri Mauler. Mauler
would open up fast and furious on Magnum, trying for the quick victory.
But, TA's stamina and conditioning would allow him to sustain the
onslaught and start his comeback. These
two soon would "throw the rulebook out the window" and an
all-out slugfest would ensue. Magnum
finally manages to catch the Mauler in his famous belly-to-belly suplex
and claim the victory. A
battered Magnum retains the US title, but not without earning it the
hard way.
EIGHTH
EVENT-N.W.A. WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
This
is another matchup of two great tag teams that have worn the NWA World
Tag Team belts. The
Anderson Brothers have been the standard by which many other tag teams
are judged. Their
innovative style carried them many successes and many tag team titles.
But, the Russians Ivan & Nikita Koloff are no strangers to
brutal matches. This will
definitely be a big donnybrook! From
the opening bell, the Anderson's seem to be using more legitimate
wrestling holds than their opponents.
But, that doesn't mean that Gene and Ole won't resort to a few
punches and hair pulls of their own.
However, any resemblance from this point forward to a wrestling
match is negligible. After
about 10 minutes of action, both teams start brawling all over the
place, both in and out of the ring.
The referee tries to regain control, but his attempts are futile.
He calls for the bell and declares this a No Contest.
Big surprise, huh? J
NINTH
EVENT-HAIR VERSUS MASK
The
crafty ring veteran Masked Superstar against the wild Scotsman aptly
named "Rowdy" Roddy Piper.
Who could ask for a better matchup?
Add on to that the special stipulation of Superstar's legendary
mask against the golden locks of Piper and this will most certainly be a
great bout. These two would
match hold for hold for the opening part of the match.
Piper's sometimes comical "attack" on Superstar is very
entertaining to the fans, but just seems to infuriate the big masked
man. After attempting to
make this a partially clean match, Masked Superstar then decides to
start taking advantage of the rules...as in blatant illegal moves right
in front of the referee! Piper
is soon getting beaten down by Superstar, who appears to be setting him
up for his Cobra Clutch. A
whip into the corner, followed by a rousing Lariat, and now Piper is
right for the picking. Superstar
comes up behind a dazed Piper and clamps on the Cobra Clutch!
Piper is just groggy enough for this to be the end of the
match...or is he? The ref
raises his hand...once...twice...thre-NO!
Piper's arm stays up in the air and Hot Rod starts to wave his
hand for the fans to start making noise!
The crowd obliges, and Piper manages to back up hard into the
corner, forcing Superstar to release the hold!
Piper then clamps on a sleeper hold, and Superstar begins to
fade. The ref picks
up MS's arm...and it drops! The
second time, same thing! On
the third and final lift... THE ARM GOES LIMP!!!
Piper has won! As
Superstar drops to the canvas, Piper gets the scissors (that Superstar
had planned using on Piper's hair) and begins to cut away at the back of
his foe's hood. Two minutes
later, off comes the mask...but Superstar's face is still covered by
tape! Suddenly, Masked
Superstar "awakens" and grabs the scissors out of Piper's
hands and uses them to wail away on Roddy.
Soon, Piper's face is covered with blood and he his almost out on
his feet. The ref tries to
intervene, but Superstar gives him a knock upside the head and sends him
sprawling. Superstar then
begins to cut Piper's hair! After
a few snips here and there, just enough to make Piper look ridiculous,
Superstar ceases his barbering and let's Roddy drop to the mat.
Piper has won the battle, but looks like he has lost the war!
TENTH
EVENT-IRON MAN MATCH (60 MINUTE TIME LIMIT~MOST FALLS WINS)
I
know that this card is supposed to match up wrestlers from different Mid
Atlantic eras, but Johnny Valentine against his archrival Wahoo McDaniel
is a timeless matchup that just HAS to be included.
These two would battle each other for hours on end, night after
night, year after year, in many towns all over the country.
And, make this an Iron Man Match with a one-hour time limit; you
can just imagine how classic this is going to be!
Both wrestlers start out in a slow, methodical pace.
Being careful not to make a mistake that would cost them what
could be a fatal fall; both Valentine and Wahoo are leery of each other.
Once the two do lock up, the action picks up in a hurry!
A flurry of hard rights by Valentine is countered by the
trademark chops from Wahoo. Neither
one will ever ask for mercy, nor certainly neither will show it!
The ebb and flow of the match continues on, with no pin falls or
submissions garnered. It
begins to look like there will be a low number of falls in this match, a
point that proves to be true. After
sixty grueling minutes, both men at near exhaustion, the bell rings to
signal the end of the match. A
time limit draw is the end result...but no one feels cheated after the
decision is announced. The
fans realize they have witnessed a bit of history here and give both men
a standing ovation for their efforts.
After an intermission, the final match will take place.
The
one and only "Nature Boy" Ric Flair defends the coveted
National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Championship against one
of the best true wrestlers in the business, Tim "Mr.
Wrestling" Woods! Woods
has had other opportunities at the gold, but always come up a bit short.
Flair, as a multi-time champion, will resort to any means to
retain his title. This will
be a classic test for Flair, as Woods can to toe-to-toe with the best of
any generation. Woods opens
quickly with several arm drags, followed by a couple of body slams.
This sends Flair out of the ring to regroup.
Trying to slow things down, Flair begs off as he returns to the
ring, but Tim knows all too well the strategy of Naitch.
Woods doesn't let up on his assault on the champ, and soon gets a
couple of two-counts on Ric. Flair
is definitely on the defensive now and eventually gets a little panicky.
A thumb to the eyes, followed by a cheap shot to Woods' jaw, and
Ric is making a comeback. Wasting
little time, Flair is now in control of the match, and begins to work on
the legs of his opponent. After
what seems like an eternity, Flair goes for the figure four leglock.
Woods, right in the middle of the ring, struggles to make it to
the ropes. Flair is
applying the pressure unmercifully on Tim.
Straining with all his might, Woods manages to reverse the hold!
Now, with Flair screaming in pain and unable to break the hold,
Woods looks like this might be his night to capture the title!
Ric then manages to crawl to the ropes, forcing a break.
Flair is lying in the corner, holding his left knee.
The ref comes in to check on Ric, and Tim Woods looks on to see
if Flair is really hurt, or just faking it.
Then, Flair grabs the referee by the shirt in an attempt to stand
up, but manages to sneak in a low blow on Woods!
As Ric does get up, he re-applies the figure four to the ailing
Woods. As the ref goes to
check on Tim, Flair grabs the bottom rope for extra leverage.
Woods is really hurt by the low blow, and the added pain from the
figure four makes Tim almost pass out.
His shoulders are on the mat, and the ref has no choice but to
count the 1-2-3. Flair,
using the tactics that earned him the moniker of "the dirtiest
player in the game", has retained his NWA title.
As
you can see, the action from the Mid Atlantic area can be stretched
across many decades. This
is a testimony to the great matches and wrestlers that have come through
Jim Crockett Promotions over the years.
I hope you have enjoyed my little trip down memory lane.
Managers that made their mark in JCP.
