MACW #7 Page #2

Ric Flair vs. Harley Race for the NWA World Title in a steel cage match with Gene Kiniski as the referee - This was the Wrestling Observer match of the year in 1983 and it was a great choice, because both men work their ass off and there was great psychology in the match. Flair wins using a splash off of the top rope on Race for the 3 count and Flair does an emotional speech after the match thanking his fans and friends.

Starrcade 84

Caudle and Solie returned for this one and though it wasn’t as good as the first one, fans packed the closed circuit locations to see it.

Denny Brown vs. Mike Davis for the NWA Jr. Heavyweight Title - This was a decent match and Brown gets the pinfall.

Brian Adias vs. Masao Ito - This was a bland match with Adias winning because he was getting a small push at the time.

Mike Graham vs. Jesse Barr for the Florida Title.- This was a real good match with Barr picking up the win and retaining his title.

The Assassin (Jody Hamilton)/Buzz Tyler vs. The Zambuie Express (Leroy Brown & Ray Candy) in an elimination tag team match - Buzz and Assassin pick up the win in this one that really wasn’t a good match.

Manny Fernandez vs. Black Bart in a brass knux match - Manny picks up the win in a decent bloody match.

Jimmy Valiant vs. Paul Jones in a tuxedo street fight/loser leaves town match - Jones gets the win with help from Ray Candy and sends Valiant packing for a few weeks.

Dick Slater vs. Ron Bass for the Mid-Atlantic Title - Slater’s push is going down so Bass retains his title in a good match.

Ivan/Nikita Koloff vs. Ole Anderson/Keith Larsen - This was Nikita’s coming out party and Larsen’s going away party because his small push ended right here as he gets pinned and he fades away into jobdom as Nikita becomes the big star for the future.

Ricky Steamboat vs. Tully Blanchard for the NWA T.V. Title where the DQ rule is waived and both men put up $10,000 - An awesome match where Tully goes over big with a clean pinfall over Steamboat.

Superstar Graham vs. Wahoo McDaniel for the U.S. Title - This was supposed to be Barry Windham winning the belt from Wahoo, but he jumped to the WWF a month earlier, so they threw Graham in and Wahoo keeps the belt.

Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes for the NWA Title in a $1,000,000 challenge with Joe Frazier as the referee - A controversial ending with Frazier stopping the match due to a cut over Dusty’s eye.

Starrcade 85

This was split into two cities and sold out both Greensboro and Atlanta, and they used closed circuit once again to get more business. Bob Caudle and Tony Schiavione called this card.

Greensboro

Denny Brown vs. Rocky King - Brown picks up the win.

Don Kernodle vs. Tommy Lane - Kernodle has fallen from grace but gets the win.

Krusher Khruschev vs. Sam Houston for the Mid-Atlantic Title - Khruschev wins the belt in a decent match.

Ron Bass vs. Black Bart in a bullrope match and if Bass wins he gets a match with J.J. Dillon - This was a total bloodbath and both men were just a crimson mask. Bass gets the win and then goes on to face Dillon. Black Bart interferes and Dillon gets the upset.

Buddy Landel vs. Terry Taylor for the National Title - Landel gets the belt in a great match and also gets fired soon afterward because of his problems. Landel would have been huge if not for his problems.

Magnum T.A. vs. Tully Blanchard for the U.S. Title in an I Quit match - This was a tremendous bloody and brutal match. Both men were awesome and the heat was great. Tully has to quit when Magnum gets a jagged piece off of a wooden chair that Tully was trying to use on him and Magnum regains his title.

Rock & Roll Express vs. Ivan/Nikita Koloff for the NWA Tag Team Titles in a steel cage match - R & R regains the belts in a really good match.

Atlanta

Thunderfoot vs. Italian Stallion - The great Thunderfoot gets the win.

Pez Whatley vs. Mike Davis - Whatley is like Kernodle here as well.

Manny Fernandez vs. Abdullah The Butcher in a Mexican Death Match with a sombrero on a pole - Another bloodbath on this card and Manny climbs the pole to get the hat and the win.

Superstar Graham vs. The Barbarian - This was yet another bloodbath that started out as an arm-wrestling match.

Ole/Arn Anderson vs. Wahoo McDaniel/Billy Jack Haynes for the NWA National Tag Team Titles - Wahoo and BJ are the U.S. Tag champs and the Minnesota Wrecking Crew get the win in a decent match.

Midnight Express vs. Jimmy Valiant/Miss Atlanta Lively (Ronnie Garvin in drag) in an Atlanta Streetfight - This was also another bloody match and Jim Cornette gets his pants torn off after Valiant and Lively get the win.

Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes for the NWA Title - This was the ultimate "Dusty finish" as there’s a ref bump, and the Anderson’s run in and interfere, then a second ref runs in and counts Flair’s shoulders down and Dusty wins the belt until the next Saturday on TBS when the fans found out that the original ref DQ’d Dusty for the ref bump.

NEXT MONTH:

We will look at the year 1981 in the Mid-Atlantic area.
