 - Tim Dills

1965-1989

It was just over three years ago when the Kayfabe Memories web site debuted. It was also just three years ago when I began writing monthly columns about the old Memphis territory for this site. Since then we have covered a lot of territory, 1965 to 1989 specifically. One more time we look back. This time we look back year by year and I have added my picks for certain categories in the territory. My opinion, as stated before, carries as much weight as yours and I urge you to add your thoughts about these categories by visiting the KM Message Board.

Here are the categories and how I defined them:

  • Top babyface-defined as the leading fan favorite in the territory during the year.
  • Top heel-defined as the leading villain in the territory during the year.
  • Top feud-the series of matches that garnered the most interest during the year.
  • Top babyface team-the leading tag team of fan favorites in the territory during the year.
  • Top heel team-the leading villainous tag team in the territory during the year.
  • Top manager-the leading (mostly) non-wrestling personality in the territory during the year.
  • Top newcomer-the leading wrestler or manager either as a totally new performer to the territory or returning to the territory after a substantial absence in the territory during the year.
  • Most valuable performer-the area’s overall top wrestler or manager or team in the territory during the year.
  • Note: On most categories I have included honorable mention candidate.

 1965

  • Top babyface: Jackie Fargo. Honorable mention: Len Rossi
  • Top heel: Tojo Yamamoto. Honorable mention: Alex Perez
  • Top feud: Mike Clancy & Frankie Cain vs. The Masked Medics. Honorable mention: Kurt Von Brauner & Karl Von Brauner vs. Jackie Fargo & Mario Milano
  • Top babyface team: Jackie Fargo & Mario Milano. Honorable mention: Irish Mike Clancy & Frankie Cain
  • Top heel team: Kurt Von Brauner & Karl Von Brauner. Honorable mention: Tojo Yamamoto & Alex Perez
  • Top manager: Saul Weingeroff
  • Top newcomer: Gory Guerrero. Honorable mention: Hiro Matsuda
  • Most valuable performer: Jackie Fargo. Honorable mention: Saul Weingeroff
  • Quick thoughts on 1965: No doubt Jackie Fargo was the top attraction during this year. The Von Brauners and Weingeroff also had a big year in the area.

 1966

  • Top babyface: Jackie Fargo. Honorable mention: Al Costello
  • Top heel: Tojo Yamamoto. Honorable mention: Corsica Joe
  • Top feud: Mario Milano & Len Rossi vs. Tojo Yamamoto & a series of partners. Honorable mention: Jackie Fargo vs. Saul Weingeroff.
  • Top babyface team: Mario Milano & Len Rossi. Honorable mention: Al Costello & Herb Welch
  • Top heel team: The Masked Blue Infernos. Honorable mention: The Masked Medics.
  • Top manager: Saul Weingeroff
  • Top newcomer: Luke Graham. Honorable mention: Jack Brisco
  • Most valuable performer: Mario Milano & Len Rossi. Honorable mention: Tojo Yamamoto
  • Quick thoughts on 1966: Interestingly, Al Costello spent most of the year here and worked as a fan favorite. Rookie Jack Brisco spent some time here early in the year. The Blue Infernos were in the midst of an incredible run.

 1967

  • Top babyface: Len Rossi. Honorable mention: Jackie Fargo
