- Sean Rowland When we last saw the Mid-South Tag-Team Titles, they were in the possession of Dick Murdoch & The Junkyard Dog. They had taken the titles from The Grappler & The Super Destroyer after they had been granted a return match, because of Ernie Ladd's interference in the two teams' previous match. Ladd also found himself suspended by the Mid-South board because of his interference in said match. However, Ladd hadn't gotten to be the most hated man in the Mid-South area because he was good at following the rules. Ladd tended to write his own rules. Thus, The Big Cat got himself a manager's license. And, he imported a team he felt would be able to defeat Murdoch & The Dog. Ladd brought in none other than former WWF Tag-Team Champions, Afa & Sika, The Wild Samoans. Ladd was proven correct because in June of 1981, The Samoans defeated Dick Murdoch & JYD for the Mid-South Titles. Murdoch & JYD bounced back and beat The Samoans to regain the belts in July of 1981, only to see The Samoans rebound and take the gold again. And this time, they wild islanders injured Dick Murdoch and put him out of action. JYD now needed a partner. And, he found a most unlikely one in October of 1981. Mike George returned to the Mid-South area and challenged Ted DiBiase to a North American Title match. It was George's first TV match in the area since he had left back in 1979. DiBiase was the man who had defeated George for the North American Title back then, and George wanted some revenge. The two engaged in a good back and forth match, and George used his same old dirty tactics. But, much like the last time they had met, DiBiase proved to be the better man. Later in the broadcast, The Junkyard Dog was pearl harbored by the Samoans and Ernie Ladd. Suddenly, Mike George raced down to ringside with a chair. As The Samoans held a helpless JYD, George reared back with the chair…. and teed off on one of The Samoans. To the fans amazement, Mike George helped The Dog clear the ring, and then shook hands with him. It turned out that The Dog had helped George out in a tag-team situation in Japan, after George's regular partner, Bob Sweetan, no showed. And because of this, George felt he owed JYD. The two began to team regularly, and in October of 1981, Mike George & The Junkyard Dog managed to defeat The Samoans for the Titles. More...
