- Mike Rodgers In 1967 Lonnie was racking up single wins over very impressive competition, Johnny Kostas, Luther Lindsey, Frank Monte and Jim Osborne to name a few. Lonnie and Tony Borne's second reign as tag champs came to an end on August 10th, 1967 at the hands of Kostas & Osborne, but not before they had beat such teams as Tosh Togo and Paul Jones, Luther Lindsey and Bob Sweetan, Shag Thomas & Luther Lindsey, Pepper Martin & Ripper Collins. The Kostas-Osborne team didn’t hang onto the belts very long as they lost the belts back to Tony & Lonnie two weeks later. Mayne and Borne's television interviews were always flamboyant at the old Portland Armory. Mayne would do anything that he had a notion to. One time he jumped off the crows nest onto a hanging lamp and swung out over the crowd a good 20 feet off the ground. Borne would grab him and pull him back in and say, “What are you doing?" Mayne and Borne had a short third reign as on September 6th they lost the belts to the new team of Johnny Kostas and Dean Ho. Mayne & Borne won the belts shortly thereafter. During this reign they met and defeated some very tough competition, Bearcat Wright & Pepper Gomez, Wright & Stan Stasiak, Gomez & Pedro Morales, Sandy Barr & Johnny Kostas, Pat Patterson and Ray Stevens, and Kostas and Stasiak. Lonnie let this feud with Stasiak carry over into singles matches. They met numerous times and the win count was virtually even. On November 28th, 1967 Mayne earned his first shot at the NWA World Heavyweight Championship held by Gene Kiniski. The match went to the third fall before Mayne got carried away and was disqualified. The team of Mayne and Borne started out 1968 in great fashion as they captured the World Tag team Championship from Pedro Morales & Pepper Gomez. They held those prized belts for 20 days. On February 12th they lost the belts back to Gomez & Morales, this loss caused the break up ofthe Borne-Mayne partnership, each blaming the other for the loss of the titles. Borne was transformed into the hero while Mayne was still on the wrong side of the fence. They met for the first time February 22nd, in a match that was billed as the Greatest Grudge Match of The Century. The match drew over 8000 people. Tony won the first fall with his Bombs Away Leap. In the second fall Borne drew blood by pounding Mayn’s head into the ringpost. Lonnie drew blood on Tony by knee-dropping him across the skull. Mayne’s new tag partner Beauregard interfered and pulled Tony from the ring where Mayne attacked him further. For this action Mayne was DQ'd and Tough Tony suffered a back injury. More...
