 - Mike Rodgers

We have talked about some of the top preliminary stars in the NW in the past few installments. Last month, I talked about the news of the passing of Haru Sasaki

Here are some more of the top preliminary guys from the NW:

1. Ricky Hunter... Hunter was a top babyface preliminary wrestler.  Very solidly built, very believable. He used a Indian Deathlock style hold for a finisher at times. Sold very well. I still remember when he tried to bodyslam Bull Ramos and he sold his back for the entire match. Also wrestled in San Francisco and other places as the Gladiator. He also wrestled for the WWF in their early expansion years as the Gladiator in the early 80’s.

2. Chris Colt... Chris Colt was around here for years as a opening match heel. For a long time, I didn’t realize just how good he was. He was a flashy, great worker who put everyone over. Colt had his runs in Detroit, Arizona and Washington where he was described as a tremendous draw when put in that position.

3. Verne Siebert... Siebert was here in the mid 80’s. For years he had written for the program in Vancouver Canada. When he started up there he was horrible. By the time he came down here he was a average worker but above average at drawing heat. He reminded me of Colt as far as ability to open the show and get the crowd going. Several years later he returned to the Portland area and Siebert had turned into a very good worker.

4. Jack Bence....Jack started in the 50’s. He had polio when he was a youngster and became a very good swimmer to help battle the polio. In the 50’s he actually had some main events in both Portland and Vancouver. By the late 60’s and early 70’s he never won a match. But he was still entertaining!!!

5. Tito Montez...Tito debuted in the Portland area in the late 50’s as Eddie Sullivan. He returned in Portland through out the early and mid 70’s. Tito got one main event where he had a chance to team with Andre The Giant in Portland. In Arizona it was a different story as he was one of the biggest draws ever.  More...
