- Cole Meade It's time once again for the Smoky Mountain Wrestling review, wrestling fans. Last month, I covered the SMW Heavyweight Title Tournament, which was one of two MAJOR titles SMW carried. The other, however, was the SMW Tag Team Titles. These were decided in a one night, single elimination, eight team tournament. The date, April 23, 1992 saw a seven match tournament to crown the first ever undisputed SMW Tag Team Champions. The teams involved included The Batten Twins, the original Heavenly Bodies (Tom Prichard and Stan Lane), The Fantastics, Joel Deaton and Billy Black, Davey and Johnny Rich, Rip Morgan and Jack Victory, Ivan and Vladimir Koloff and finally Danny Davis and Joey Maggs. FIRST ROUND The first round saw the Bodies gain a relatively easy victory over Brad and Bart Batten, Joey Maggs and Danny Davis got a shocking, upset victory over the team of the Koloffs, which no one saw coming, Rip Morgan and Jack Victory used their power and veteran knowledge (as well as heel tactics) to oust Davey and Johnny Rich from the tourney, and in the final first round match, The Fantastics got a clear cut victory over the infamous indy team of Joel Deaton and Billy Black. SEMI FINALS The Semis seemed to be clear cut as to whom would be going into the finals and clear cut it was, not only the top two teams in the tournament but the top two seeds advanced to the finals after the Bodies defeated "The Nightmare" Danny Davis and "Jumpin'" Joey Maggs and the Fantastics got the win over Rip Morgan and Jack Victory (now of ECW fame). THE FINALS... The Finals came down to the top baby face team to take on the top heel team in the company.... The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers) who have held almost every tag title that matters known to man and The Heavenly Bodies (Tom Prichard and Stan Lane) managed by Jim Cornette. "Sweet" Stan Lane, a former Fabulous one with Steve Keirn and Midnight Express member with Bobby Eaton was on the rise again with his third tag partner Tom Prichard, who has been big on the indy and territorial scene from the 80's into early 90's mainly in the Central States, Texas and Mid South regions. The match was long and it was indeed what SMW claims to show you, Wrestling the Way it Used to Be! More...
