- Will Gonzalez As the month of May rolled around the SWCW World title tournament was held in Houston Texas at the Summit... the bad thing about the tourney was that none of the major world champions took part in this tournament. Joe Blanchard and Lou Thesz made appearances on the USA network inviting any champ to wrestle in Houston but none showed. What was being billed as a tournament of wrestlers from all around the country, turned out to be only Southwest wrestlers. The matches below were held that night: Round One Sweet Brown Sugar beat Luke Williams Adrian Adonis beat Bob Sweetan Wahoo McDaniel beat Bobby Jaggers Round Two Bob Orton beat Sweet Brown Sugar Adrian Adonis beat Wahoo McDaniel Final Adrian Adonis defeated Bob Orton to become the undisputed SWCW World Champion. At the end of the tournament, Adonis was given Lou Thesz's old NWA world title. With SWCW going at full speed Joe Blanchard took it up a notch, he began a working agreement with Georgia Championship Wrestling. Now fans in Texas got to see the top stars of the Georgia area in Texas. Among the wrestlers who came to Texas for a few matches were: Tommy Rich, Stan Hansen, Ole Anderson, Buzz Sawyer, Larry Zbyszko, Paul Ellering, and Abdullah the Butcher. Some of the Southwest wrestlers ventured to Georgia to wrestle on TBS and at the Omni, Scott Casey and Tully Blanchard among those who traveled into the GCW territory. This agreement combined for a great card on July 4 1983 at Hemisfair with Tommy Rich wrestling Buzz Sawyer to a bloody double DQ in a match that had Lou Thesz as special referee. Stan Hansen met and was defeated by Tully Blanchard, and Scott Casey defeated Larry Zbyszko by DQ. In the meantime Tully Blanchard who was the SWCW champion was involved in a bloody feud with Bob Sweetan over the title... these two had one of the bloodiest feuds ever in the state of Texas. In the tag team division, the Sheepherders (Luke Williams and Johnathan Boyd) beat the Grapplers to win the vacated SWCW tag team title that were vacated earlier in the year when Tully Blanchard turned on Gino Hernandez after winning the belts. In July Johnathan Boyd was involved in a serious car accident in San Antonio, and he was replaced by Bobby Jaggers, but on the July 4th card mentioned earlier Luke Williams turned on Bobby Jaggers after losing to Bob Sweetan and Sweet Brown Sugar in a non title tag team match, thus this set up a USA Vs New Zealand feud that would go on for a few months.
