- Chuck Merkich In addition to the heavyweight and tag team titles, Texas All-Star Wrestling had several other titles, one of those being the USA Junior Heavyweight title. Just like the heavyweight championship that was begun anew when Southwest Championship Wrestling was sold to TASW, the junior heavyweight title also started from scratch. In May of 1985 Rick McCord, a young veteran of NWA rings was billed as the champion when he arrived in the area. McCord immediately became involved in a feud with one of the top heels in the area at that time "Pretty Boy" Paul Kelly. Kelly was a young arrogant wrestler who was very reminiscent of Buddy Landell with the way he used his "better than you" smugness to irritate the fans. Kelly would defeat McCord for the belt 2 months upon its birth in July, in San Antonio, TX. Kelly was fired from the promotion sometime in August for reasons that to the best of my knowledge were never made known. A tournament for the vacant belt was held on September 1st with Dale Veasey coming out on top by defeating Terry Daniels in the final. While not a household name, Veasey was a very capable wrestler who probably deserved a better push. He would remain champion for over 4 months until leaving the area. With Veasey's leaving came another vacancy but the promotion answered it by awarding the title to El Halcon in February by saying that he won the title in El Paso. This next part gets a little confusing because Mike Golden would become the next champion on February 23,1986 in San Antonio but according to the Great Hisa's Puroresu Dojo Pro-Wrestling Title histories there is a report that states that the match was fictitious and that El Halcon never even entered the promotion. Since this happened after TASW was taken off the air in my area, I can't say what really happened and since I haven't been able to find any more information on it, it leaves a some what gray area in the history of the USA junior heavyweight title. Golden would go on to hold to the title for just under 2 months before dropping it to Al Gavigan in Pasadena, Tx. on April 25,1986. Gavigan was really talented and if given a chance could have shone in any wrestling federation in the world. Tommy Wright would defeat Gavigan on June 15,1986 in San Antonio, Tx. to win the title. Not sure how long Wright held onto the title due to the fact the records for that time period are sketchy at best. More...
