- Charles Laffere
FIGHT OR FALL
Chris Adams, former UWF Tag Team title co-holder, died
on October 7, 2001. He was shot in the early morning hours in
Waxahachie, TX following a fight with a former roommate. Adams was 46.
An excellent feature on Adams’ life can be found at here.
As an impromptu duo, Adams and Terry Taylor won the UWF Tag Team
Title Tournament in Fort Worth, TX on February 7, 1987. They were
champions for two months before losing the straps to Sting and Rick
Steiner in Atlanta on April 12, 1987. Ironically, the same two teams met
the night before at the Superblast at the Superdome with the match being
the best on the card by far. Adams and Taylor split as a team soon
thereafter, with Adams assuming the role of the face and Taylor as the
heel. They had a memorable feud: however, Adams suffered nerve damage in
his back during one of their matches and was affected by the injury for
the rest of his career.
I devoted a previous installment to a brief synopsis of the careers
of Chris Adams and Terry Taylor. It can be found at in my UWF
#6 . Bill Watts valued Adams for his good reason: he always gave his
best when wrestling. Rest in peace, Chris.
“Brothers here I stand
Spread my wings and take command
The sky he justly planned
The boy become a man
After all this time
I tell myself that
I'm not just wasting time
Oh you know I'm not that way inclined
Brothers if you hear
Raise your flags and make it clear
There is more to fear
If we wait for another year
After all this time
I tell myself that
I'm just passing through time”
Thin Lizzy, “Fight or Fall.”
Hello, and welcome back to the UWF corner of Kayfabe
Memories. My name is Charles Laffere, and this month we will be
examining the Freebirds role in the promotion’s hot feud during the
spring of 1987. With the face side of the UWF depleted by the loss of
Jim Duggan and Ted DiBiase to the WWF within a two month period, Bill
Watts and company focused on a heel vs. heel feud between the ‘Birds
and Devastation, Inc. More...
