- Charles Laffere
“Ch-ch-Changes
Oh, look
out you Rock 'n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
Turn and
face the strain
Ch-ch-Changes
Pretty
soon you're gonna get a little older
Time may
change me
But I
can't trace time
I said
that time might change me
But I
can't trace time.”
David
Bowie, “Changes.”
David
Bowie would make a terrific heel manager. He did pose as a boxer on the
cover of “Let’s Dance.” Of course, he dressed in drag on “Hunky
Dory,” as some type of androgynous canine man on “Diamond Dogs,”
and in a clown outfit for “Scary Monsters,” so what does that
matter? Regardless, the icy demeanor, the different colored eyes, and
his chameleon nature could ensure heel heat. Heck, I can hear fans
booing now, and that’s only partially due to the quality of the albums
he’s released lately. I’m pretty sure Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and
Buddy Roberts spent some time listening to El
Hombre que Vendio el Mundo during their road trips.
Hello,
and welcome back to the UWF corner of Kayfabe
Memories. My name is Charles Laffere, and this month we will be
examining the Freebirds’ role in the promotion’s unplanned period of
transition in the late spring and summer of 1987. As we mentioned last
time, even in the pre-Internet “inside information” days it was
clear that the UWF was undergoing major changes during this period, none
of which benefited the company. The April Superdome Superblast show,
while very entertaining, drew less than 5,000 people to the Superdome, a
disappointing number compared to previous crowds of 20, 000 or more.
Terry Gordy continued to chase the UWF title, wrestling the One Man Gang
to a draw in Fort Worth on April 18. However, the title scene would
change drastically the next night in Muskogee, OK, as Big Bubba Rogers
downed the Gang in a huge upset to win the UWF Heavyweight Title. The
Gang left the promotion and headed to the WWF after the loss.
It
was now evident that the UWF was losing a lot of its major talent. The
Gang, Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Ted DiBiase all jumped to the WWF and
deprived Bill Watts of three proven main-eventers. Paul Boesch ended his
alliance with Watts and entered into a working agreement with Vince
McMahon and the WWF, costing the UWF the widespread exposure that
Houston Wrestling provided. More...
