- Charles Laffere
UWF CHRISTMAS EDITION
"I'm looking at the stars and all night bars
But this party isn't real
The only star I see is in his shirt
And the bars are made of steel
Those party lights lit up so bright
Just like a Christmas tree
When I see those party lights come on
The party's over for me"
Junior Brown, "Party Lights."
Check out Junior's Git With It CD/cassette if you get a chance. Heck,
he's from Oklahoma and wears a cowboy hat and boots. He is also the only
guy I know of who can channel Ray Price, Jimi Hendrix, Ernest Tubb, and
surf guitar within the same song.
I'm still Charles Laffere and this is the UWF section of the fabulous
Kayfabe Memories website. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Kwanzaa
greetings, and Happy New Year to all. To our Canadian neighbors
celebrating Boxing Day, someone from there please e-mail and explain
that particular holiday and why there isn't a Wrestling Day as well.
Last time we met, I promised an end to the Freebirds' UWF saga. Terry
Gordy, Buddy Roberts, and Michael Hayes headlined the final Superdome
Extravanganza in New Orleans on August 1, 1987. The 'Birds took on
Skandar Akbar's Devastation Inc. members Black Bart, Bubba Rogers and
the Terminator in a Steel Cage First Blood Elimination match, at that
time possibly the most stipulations assembled in a gimmick match. This
ultimately turned out to be the final battle between the two warring
factions. Roberts, as was usually his destiny, was eliminated first. The
Terminator was then downed, while Hayes and Bart left simultaneously.
Gordy and Rogers, who had been feuded ever since Bubba-- by now the
former champ--had won the UWF World Heavyweight strap in April, faced
each other to determine who would capture victory for his team. Both
guys absolutely hammered each other before Gordy was able to gain an
advantage. Despite attempts at interference from Akbar's nefarious crew,
Gordy emerged victorious. Bam Bam was the sole survivor of the match and
the big winner on the UWF's last "supercard." More...
