Where Wrestling's Regional History Lives! |

April – June 1983 - Max Levy As
winter turned to spring in 1983, World Class Champion Wrestling was on
an absolute roll. With The Von Erichs vs. The Freebirds battling in
emotional and action packed main events and others like Iceman Parsons,
Jimmy Garvin, and Kamala getting over as stars, tickets were next to
impossible to come by. A look at the TV shows of this era shows that the
fans at The Sportatorium and Will Rogers Coliseum were packed in like
sardines and made so much noise that it seemed as if the earth would
move. The
promotion did not stop there. Von Erichs vs. Freebirds and Arman
Hussein’s stable vs. Devastation Incorporated were a good start, but
World Class needed to build further. That was accomplished by creating
new feuds. One of these pitted David Von Erich vs. Jimmy Garvin. Iceman
King Parsons got a moment in the spotlight vs. Buddy Roberts. Meanwhile
the feuds with Kevin and Kerry vs. Hayes and Gordy took on new
dimensions. World Class never liked to overwhelm fans with too many
feuds. There were usually just a few, but the promotion was able to give
these feuds more attention and TV time. The result was well-developed
feuds that drew well and are remembered to this day. It would be wrong
not to note that eventually this tendency to limit the number of feuds
and draw them out over a long period of time eventually came back to
hurt World Class in later years. The Title Scene After moving back and forth between Kevin Von Erich
and Terry Gordy during the first quarter of 1983, Kevin was in sole
possession of the American Heavyweight Title during the second quarter
of the year. The belt was de-emphasized at this time and became
secondary to the Texas Heavyweight Title. This title, which bounced
between David Von Erich and Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin as the focal point of
a fantastic feud, was the main singles title in World Class at this
time. The Six-Man Tag Team Title remained with The Fabulous Freebirds as
they battled with The Von Erichs time and again. Michael Hayes and Terry
Gordy also held the American Tag Team Title that went from buried to
prominent when Kerry Von Erich recruited Bruiser Brody as his partner.
The TV Title continued to be defended in Fort Worth. Although this
championship was normally a hot potato, Iceman Parsons and The Mongol
both enjoyed two-month reigns as champion.
