September – December 1983 - Max Levy So, what happened
in World Class Championship Wrestling in the fall of 1983? An easier
question would be to ask what didn’t happen. Enough with the
formalities, let’s dive right in. The
Talent Roster The main players
in World Class Championship Wrestling remained the same. On the babyface
side Kerry, Kevin, and David Von Erich remained as popular as ever with
Mike Von Erich preparing for his debut. Iceman Parsons, Chris Adams,
Johnny Mantell, and Jose Lothario rounded out the babyface faction. The
Fabulous Freebirds topped the heel mountain along with Jimmy Garvin and
General Skandor Akbar’s Devastation Incorporated featuring Kamala and
The Mongol. Sunshine served as Garvin’s valet and eventually was
replaced by Precious, but stayed on as a babyface. Eventually there
was some turnover. Popular Bruiser Brody, one of pro wrestling’s most
traveled battlers, had already departed. Before November had ended The
Mongol had left as well. The Missing Link would soon debut in World
Class to replace him in Devastation. The Super Destroyers entered the
promotion as members of Devastation as well. The Irwin brothers Scott
and Wild Bill wore the masks as the Super Ds. Scott had competed in many
promotions as The Super Destroyer and took the designation as # I. Wild
Bill Irwin used the Super Destroyer identity as # II for the first time
in World Class. Veteran Black Gordman, who had wrestled earlier in 1983
in San Antonio with Southwest, entered World Class as well. Boris
Zurkhoff and Tonga John filled out the ranks. Battle
for the Belts The American Title was the premier title in the promotion and was held throughout the fall by Jimmy Garvin. David Von Erich remained supreme on the Texas Title scene and held his title throughout the fall, fighting off all comers. The TV Title passed between many wrestlers as always with Chris Adams, Jimmy Garvin, and Johnny Mantell. The Fabulous Freebirds controlled the Six-Man Tag Team Title despite the fierce challenges of the Von Erichs. The American Tag Team Title was vacated when Bruiser Brody left the area. The Super Destroyers arrived in Texas as the American Tag Team Champions. The explanation was that Roddy Piper and Bulldog Brower had won the belts in a tournament in Detroit and then lost the title to the Super Destroyers in Indianapolis. Both the tourney and the title switch were fictitious, but at least served to build back the titles that had rarely been defended since Kerry and Brody won them in the first place. The Super Destroyers quickly made an enemy of Iceman King Parsons, touching off a feud that would rage well into 1983.
