- Manuel Gonzalez Welcome to the newest report from the WWC promotion on the Caribbean. Sorry for the delay in giving you an exciting report from the sunny Caribbean, but there's been a lot of things. First my wife gave birth to our fourth child, a baby boy that weighted 5 pound and 9 ounces. His name is Orlando Manuel and he was born on February 14. What a gift! Lately I has been suffering from lower back pain. I went to the doctor and did some X-rays and seems that I have a herniated disc at the vertebral column. Let's see what it is.Well, no more rundown of my problems and let's see what the year 1980 had for the WWC fans. On January, Carlos Colón was looking for the Puerto Rican Title that Abdullah The Butcher had. The first match between that year was a barbedwired match. Abdullah won the title in December 1979 and that was a war that was on their beginning in Puerto Rico. By the way that match ended in such a controversial way that the title was held up. Anyway, Carlos won the title a week later in a street fight match. Ciclón Negro, the venezuelan wrestler, had won the Caribbean Title, in December 1979, his first defense was against a wrestling great, Dick Steinborn. The tag team at the beginning of the year were The Invaders, Jose Huertas Gonzalez and Roberto Soto. Huertas, known as Invader 1, began 1980 as North American champion, but lost late in January it to Mr. Fuji. Other regulars were Jose Rivera and Huracan Castillo. Heels at the time were Al Costello, Roger Kirby, who did a 'Nature Boy' gimmick, Stan Morowski and the japanese star Mr. Fuji. Kirby and Steinborn were the North American Title holders while Dory & Terry Funk were the Tag Team champions. European wrestler Eric Froelich came to a tour as well Japanese wrestlers Mitsu Ishikawa & Haru Sonoda. In February Giant Baba came back to the island, this time as a heel. Carlos and Froelich challenged The Funks for the title. Cuban born wrestler Rufo Gutierrez, better known as Gran Apolo, also debuted for the WWC. Hugo Savoinovich, today a WWC Spanish language commentator, who was a manager at the time, had a physical involvent in the ring againt Froelich. That happened because Savinovich always helped his japanese foes in matches against the european wrestler. By the way, Froelich wrestled here in bare foot, so I do not know how he wrestled elsewhere.
