Many fans have been asking about what it
was 'really' like working for Promoter Roy Shire. As the Northern
California ring announcer for Roy from late 73 until 81, I have lots of
experience! Yes Roy was a tough man to work for. True, he certainly was
not liked by all (more workers and colleagues had more bad things to say
about him than good) but basically I speak very highly of him and
eventually I understood his ways and moods. If you did your job right and
were honest and reliable - and if he basically liked you - you could work
forever and more or less have your way (as I did).
Roy was moody, a very tough man with every other word out of his mouth a cuss word - and very 'macho' but he only wanted the best working for him. If you had a cold or flu you still showed up (as Shire did). Eventually I was publishing the ACTION WRESTLING programs for virtually all arenas and I was ring announcing at Cow Palace, Stockton, Richmond and occasionally Sacramento, then eventually for 11 cities when Terry Garvin and Louis Dondero promoted under Roy during the days of Bob Roop and Kevin Sullivan. When Shire cussed someone out it was terrible but you learned the hard way what you did wrong. There were people Roy respected (he only cussed me out 1 time in 8 years) I think Roy's relationships with Don Muraco, Great Mr. Fuji, Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson and Kinji Shibuya were excellent though Patterson and Roy had falling outs toward the end when Pat left for the East Coast. Roy was a big time promoter and had a tremendous territory; his was one of the three most successful in the 60s and 70s in the country. As Moondog Ed Moretti knows (Ed refereed then eventually wrestled for Roy) Roy was a great promoter and if you could break in with him you were set. Moretti is a tremendous worker and person and he comes from Roy's old school. All Pro Wrestling's Roland Alexander, whom I ring announced for for four years, learned a lot from Roy and that's why Roy is his number one mentor. Though I never got all the details I know Roy and Patterson were driving home from Sacramento one night (often the boys would meet at a convenient place and take one car to the arena) when they were stopped and somewhat attacked by some Hells Angels, who wanted the championship belts in the trunk. I know Roy had a virtual fistfight with Great Mephisto in Sacramento. Though quite short at about 5'7, Roy was a tough guy. I saw him physically throw out two loud mouthed teenagers in Santa Rosa who were popping off about the 'fake matches' (a no no with Roy) and I saw him physically throw them out!! Roy was often fighting with the California State Athletic Commission (and rightfully so) they wanted their cut yet insisted I announce it as an exhibition. One night in the Cow Palace the athletic commissioner said to me, quote, "So, Allan, how many thousand fools - I mean fans - do you think will show up tonight, ha ha?" Roy quickly butted in and told him to shut the ---- up or Shire will throw him out, too. He was protective of the business and was very kayfabe about everything. |
