Working for promoter Roy Shire in Northern
Calif. from 74-81 as ring announcer, publicist and program editor was a
rewarding experience. To this day many workers still say he was one of the
greatest promoters in the country with one of the best most sought after
territories. But Shire was tough; you had to be good to work for him.
Period. He cussed and he was gruff; if he didn't like you for whatever
reason (ability, personality, etc) you were out.
Some of the boys really liked him. Though he and Pat Patterson had disagreements in the end, Pat, Ray Stevens, Pepper Gomez, Don Muraco, Great Fuji, Ron Starr, Dean Ho, all respected him and did well with him. He worked hard. His wife Dorothy also played a somewhat behind the scenes role, more as secretary (she wrote checks, made calls, bookings etc., and reported to Roy any mistakes any of the boys made that she caught). Roy traveled from his ranch in Sebastapol (about 20 miles from Santa Rosa) to all the events including TV tapings in Sacramento every Mon night; Sacramento house shows on Wednesday, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, and a few spot shows. He rose early and also helped run his ranch. Though Shire might not return from the Palace to home till about 1am, he was always up at 7 or 8 to make phone calls, etc. If you think back when Shire first came here in about 62 for his day he was one of the first to create TV studio tapings and live house shows throughout the territory, where he could afford to have the wrestlers live in the area. Moondog Mayne, Patterson, Stevens, Fuji, Muraco, Gomez, all lived in this area when they were on top. Note from Allan Bolte: SOME programs from Shire's days are available through Allan Bolte. A pack of 3 programs from Cow Palace in 1980 including the 18 man battle-royal are available, all 3 for 17.00 plus 2.50 shipping.
