Hi
there, to my
"old" and, hopefully, "new" friends:
Wow! It has been some time since I have been in the wrestling loop
and I'm really excited to have been asked by Vince, and my good
friend, Tony D., to contribute to Kayfabe Memories on a regular basis.
So, from time to time, I'm happy to contribute some interesting,
funny, and sad, memories and recollections of my days as a professional
wrestler and hope that you readers will enjoy them.
Since Judy (my best friend and the most wonderful confidant I could have
ever prayed for and gotten) and I started reminiscing and talking and
laughing about old wrestling memories and happenings, it was difficult
to find "which" anecdote to begin with since there are really
so many. However, I think you'll agree this is quite funny (even
to me) and will give you a chuckle, too.
The particular incident that I write about today occurred on one of my
tours to Japan in the 1980's. Traveling along were my good
friends, the late Terry Gordy (of the Freebirds), Hawk and Animal (of
the Road Warriors) and Ric Flair. Accompanying Ric on this
particular trip was his very attractive wife.
Well, being the "young kid on the block" and also from Kansas,
they all literally took me under their wings....with the exception of
the night that Terry Gordy and the guys took me out for a "night on
the town". Following the matches, they took me to what seemed
to be every bar in Japan. As a young kid from rural Topeka,
Kansas, I had not the fortune (or misfortune???) to have experienced a
Japanese wine called Sake. Needless to say, Gordy drank me under
the table. But, being the consummate contender that I was and am
today, I vaguely remember earnestly attempting to keep up with him.
I should have known better! Well, I sort of recall being
taken back to our hotel room at the end of the evening...or maybe it was
the beginning of the morning. Who knows? Terry Gordy and I
were roommates for this particular trip and we crashed and tried to get
much needed sleep before leaving for another leg of the tour.
The next morning, even though it seemed only minutes later, everyone was
banging on our door, telling us that we were going to be late and urging
us to get our behinds out to the bus (that was the mode of
transportation from one city to another on this tour). Next was to
be a very important television interview for me since I was wrestling
one of Japan's favorite good guys. More...
